Jays shopping Burnett for SS

It's no surprise that the Blue Jays are shopping right-hander A.J. Burnett. But what they're looking for in return certainly is. The Jays are looking to obtain a shortstop in talks with other teams. The Jays have had trade talks with a number of teams regarding Burnett, who is in the third year of a five-year, $55-million contract. Burnett can opt out at the end of the season and become a free agent. He is owed $12 million in each of the final two years of his contract. Philadelphia Phillies scout Charlie Kerfeld saw Burnett's start at Miller Park against the Milwaukee Brewers and former Jays scout Ted Lekus, now with the Baltimore Orioles, saw Burnett beat the Atlanta Braves last Sunday at Rogers Centre.

Any chance they'll take Julio Lugo?

The Tigers have this Renteria guy that would look GREAT in a Jays uniform.

So what is the plan for Eckstein if they acquire another SS?

July 3, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Look for the sCrUBS to try to get this guy. Ronnie Cedeno and Rich Hill will be heading north.

I could definitely see a trade like that with the Cubs...... they are desperate for another starter, and they wouldn't mind parting with Cedeno or Hill.....although I think the Jays would try to get maybe Gallagher instead.

I will upgrade that cause nobody would take Lugo and instead of "Mr. Errors" trade Lowrey for Burnett !!! Lugo reminds me of that cartoon character Mr. Bill, everytime he makes an error he shouts - "Ohhh Nooo" !!!

i got one for you... Burnett for JETER...

I would love that, but that is highly unlikely!

Burnett for Jeter? Wow, I'd take that simply for the fact Jeter would sell at least 10,000 more tickets alone. But I doubt they would trade to division rivals.

How about for Chin-lung Hu and some prospects of the LA Dodgers?

July 3, 2008  07:33 PM ET

Burnett for Jeter? The Jays would be fools. Jeter is the most overrated player in baseball. Project Jerry Hairstons at bats to Jeters and Hairston would match Jeter in runs, RBIs and HRs plus 50 points more in average and five time the steals. Jeter is a joke.

July 3, 2008  07:57 PM ET

The most overrated player, Jeter is not.

An uninformed statement that is, young Brian.

July 3, 2008  08:55 PM ET

Most uninformed indeed Master Yoda.

For the first time in years Jeter is hitting 'only' .279 as a shortstop. On his way to the Hall he is. Hairston is on his way to his next platoon assignment, he is.

July 4, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Jeter, is the most overrated player in Baseball and if he wasn't playing for the Yankees, he would not be going to the hall

July 4, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Show me another shortstop from any team with almost 8000 at bats, and a .314 lifetime average who didn't make it into the HOF.

His defense may not be HOF but his offense has clearly been HOF worthy. Get a grip - his numbers put him in the hall whether he's playing for the Yankees or the Marlins.

Jeter is a great shortstop. I'm sure many teams like the Jays would love a guy like him in the line up (Jeter vs MacDonald...hmm). The only problem is Yankee fans pumped him up to mythic proportions which he is not.
