Canucks offer Sundin $20M

Mike Gillis promised to explore the possibility of landing a big-name when NHL free agency opened Tuesday. How about Mats Sundin? Big enough? The Vancouver Canucks GM has offered the unrestricted free agent center a two-year contract that will pay the hulking Swedish center $10 million annually. Sundin, 37, also fielded offers from the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. Nine teams have kicked the contract tires on the durable 6-foot-5, 231-pounder who has considered retirement. The Canucks' offer has made Sundin think twice about his future. Gillis has not placed a time limit on his offer, but expects to rekindle his drive to land Sundin today.

Vancouver is about to make Philly and Chicago look like Filene's basement.

Maybe he realises that if he signd for $20 mil, he may have to earn it. He has no "legacy" to fall back on, good will wise in Vancouver. Let's face it, that is a boatload of cash, and if the guy has any pride at all, he is going to be on the fence about it...

BETTMAN STILL S***S

I think Mats wants to win a cup before he retires a la Bourque.

And he's smart enough to know that he will never accomplish that in Hongcouver.

I also think he is already a rich man and just might take a lot less than $10 million to have that shot.

I'd wager Detroit is still not out of the running, but no matter where he ends up it will be in the East. Less travel for his old bones.

Hank Kingsley....agreed. Sundin wants that last chance at a Cup and I think right now he is waiting to see how free agency plays out before making his choice. He doesn't want to sign with a team and then have that team do nothing else to improve. Right now this really isn't about the money for Sundin it's about who gives him a)best chance at a cup, b)easiest travel, c)keeps him close to all his buisness ties, etc in Toronto.

Bowl30? Lung-hoot?

Sundin is sure taking his time. His character will be revealed depending on which team he chooses to play for. Canucks? Plenty of dough there Not much else. Montreal? He'd be the biggest traitor if he played there. Toronto? A city that tried to trade him. Rebuilding mode as well. NYR? No...took too long. Now they have Naslund. I say Sundin to Calgary. He can play with Cammalleri on the 2nd line. Calgarys' PP :

Iginla-Sundin-Langkow
Cammalleri-Phaneuf

Looks like one mighty PP group.

Well that's a comforting thought bgm, thanks for that!
Fortunately I still don't see Sundin coming West.
