Franchitti wants NASCAR future

Dario Franchitti isn't sure what his future holds, but the former open-wheel star said Wednesday he'd like to remain in NASCAR. Franchitti lost his full-time ride Tuesday when team owner Chip Ganassi closed down the unsponsored No. 40 Dodge 17 races into Franchitti's first season. The move also resulted in 71 layoffs. "This is not a decision he made lightly, and it shows how bad the economy is," Franchitti told The Associated Press.

I hope the rumor of Truex going to Penski isn't true.

Here is a tip Dario, become a better stock car driver and you will get your future......just stick to something you know. Open wheels......and your HOT wife

July 3, 2008  08:27 AM ET

He'll run the #40 car in Nationwide. Has had some really good runs in that car this year.

July 3, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Take your practice laps in Nationwide........watch out though for Steve Wallace.

July 3, 2008  08:39 AM ET

jackman; Very good on Wallace. I often feel that the spectators should watch out for him. Last week he took Coleman out, who is next?

July 3, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Darn right JKindle - he is not progressing too fast. You know Daddy would love for him to get to next level.

July 3, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Steve Wallace had a string of like 3 straight top 10's earlier this year, and then started wrecking out again. He's inconsistent. Coleman just needs better equipment like what he had at Gibbs.

July 3, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Of course he wants to remain in NASCAR...it's all about the cash.

July 3, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Don't you know his old buddy's, from where ever he came from are razzing him big time.
Maybe they will think twice before coming to play with the Big Boys!

July 3, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Too many of the Open Wheel **** are comin over just to try their hand at it. It should be mandatory they run a FULL season in Nationwide before they get to the Cup level. Kinda like playing in the minors first to see if they are worth the risk/cash.

July 3, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Franchitti would've been better off to have spent the entire '08 season running the 40 car in the Nationwide Series, and, turning some laps in the Truck series. He was not ready for the level of competition in the Cup Series just yet, IMHO.

July 3, 2008  10:04 AM ET

I agree with the above poster. Of the open wheelers that came over JPM and Hornish were probably the most ready. JPM has a natural ability, and Hornish just has an incredible amount of experience at oval racing. Franchitti is good, but has a much steeper learning curve.

July 3, 2008  10:16 AM ET

The closing down of the 40 car team is NOT good news for NASCAR in general. Gotta wonder if one of the big money teams in all of NASCAR goes belly up, what of some of the low budget teams that are getting bye week to week? Pretty soon teams won't have to worry about the "go or go home" rule. They won't have enough cars to make a 43 car field. These discussion about whether Open Wheelers belong or not won't matter.

July 3, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I would have thought that Dario would have a better future in open wheel. Maybe it's more about proving to himself and other competitors that he can race in Nascar.

July 3, 2008  11:31 AM ET

I think RZ may have hit on something there. What else did Hornish and Franchitti have to win in the IRL? They both had Indianapolis 500 wins and IndyCar Championships(Hornish had 3, Franchitti had 1).

July 3, 2008  12:47 PM ET

so that gives them carte blanche to clutter up the cup races with their ineptitude

July 3, 2008  01:11 PM ET

If a Cup Series contract is dangled in front of my face I'm sure as heck going to sign it without a second thought. Same thing goes for most of these open wheel stars that have won it all in open wheel. The only exception is JPM, who took a pay cut to come to NASCAR.

Damn shame too....he should have taken the cash and stayed there....worthless little punk.

July 3, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Why? He would've blown everyone away in F-1 last year. I applaud him for taking on a new challenge.

July 3, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Hamilton would have owned him too...just like he did everyone else. New challenge or not, he is a danger to the other drivers in NASCAR. He should be suspended for spinning Kyle Busch.
