Phillies looking at Sabathia, Bedard

With starter Brett Myers down in the minors, the Phillies have Indians lefthander C.C. Sabathia atop their wish list and have scouted him in recent weeks. But they also have an eye on Seattle Mariners lefthander Erik Bedard, who is 5-4 with a 3.79 ERA in 14 starts and seems to be available. Charley Kerfeld, special assistant to general manager Pat Gillick, scouted Bedard in Seattle recently. And the Mariners had a couple of scouts in Reading last night to watch righthander Carlos Carrasco, who is considered the Phillies' top prospect.

The Phillies just don't have a lot to give up, it seems. Sure, they need pitching, but do they have the prospects to give up?

What a surprise, another team needing pitching and they are looking at CC!?!? I think it is safe to assume that ANY team needing pitching before the trade deadline that has a shot at the playoffs will be looking at CC. So the rumors of every team looking at him can stop being reported on. WE KNOW he is about to be the best FA pitcher out there. So every team that needs a pitcher will look at him. Enough of the rumors.

I watch them on sports senter too.

Center, sheesh.

July 3, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Oh gods no! Not fatboy! He is just going to stop trying after he gets his payday!

YOU KNOW IT! Ala Andruw Jones.

I'd rather have Bedard than CC...

July 3, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Okay, it is written down.

July 3, 2008  02:46 PM ET

I wrote "IT" down, when I looked in the mirror it said "TI". What's the magic trick?

July 3, 2008  04:17 PM ET

phillies best prospect has a shoulder problem. fergettaboutit. the only way they get decent arm is through a trade. who goes? myers, burrell, victorino, werth.....howard???? they should hold tight. the mets are coming to town and that should pad their lead. and fire omar would have to change his user name to phillies rule the mets. scribble it

July 3, 2008  05:13 PM ET

Who cares about the mets really...I mean the Marlins are more of a threat than the mutts.

Mutts have too many issues, being jealous of NY Yankees, a manager who has the mouth squirts, 3 or 4 star players who are hurt, 3 or 4 star players who dont try when they are playing.

I am more worried about contracting SARS and Global warming than I am the Mutts. Which is to say not at all.

High and outside that pitch will be.

July 3, 2008  07:54 PM ET

Foreseen it, I have.

July 4, 2008  01:57 AM ET

I see it being Bedard he wasn't happy with trade to Seatle in the first place, Also I hear the front office isnt happy with him or vice-versa, Seatle is trying to build young pitchers for the futre get a decent veteran pitcher and young bats, I could see Carlos Carrasco, Brett Myers, or Jason Werth or any combo of the 3 with three or picks, If phillies get rid of victorino they should just trade howard utley hamels lidge rollins as well

On the radio I heard a trade option that I think would be a great move. Forget Bedard or CC and go after Lincecum from San Fran for Howard and a prospect. Lincecum currently has a 10-1 record with a 2.49 era and is only 24 years old. Make that move and instant world series bound.
