A day after talking with Celtics coach Doc Rivers, a longtime family friend, Clippers free agent forward Corey Maggette said he is seriously considering an offer to join the NBA champions. Maggette said he is still in awe about being contacted by the Celtics and has been mulling over their contract offer as well as interest from several other teams. An NBA source said the Celtics offered Magette the full midlevel exception, expected to be worth $5.8 million.

Wow, this would be huge. They could replace James Posey with a 20 PPG scorer. He won't reach that total in Boston of course, but he will still be another scoring threat to back up the aging Ray Allen, who looks like he will be the first to fade. But this is probably a long shot.

You honestly think this is a good move?? Posey was the Celtics Muscle and top perimeter defender. Contrary to possibly alot of belief he was just as important to there Defense as KG is... Bad move to take ANOTHER scorer over a Defender

Maggette has offers from 2 proven winners. At this point, the only question should be the Spurs or the Celtics. Maybe after being with the Clippers, the thought of playing for a winner is too scary.

July 4, 2008  09:35 AM ET

magette might go more for the ring and less for the money leaving those two teams. I think the fact he is being offered a deal from the NBA champs will overtake him. Celts will be unstoppable with him and the big 3 on the court.

What you're suggesting makes absolutely no sense at all. Someone needs to be on the floor when the big guns sit down. Posey was invaluable off the bench. Magette would simply be another piece, An insurance policy for Ray Allen.

July 4, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Posey is a great role player. He is looking for a conract that runs beyond Garnett's, Pierces's, and Allen's. If they gave him the five years he's looking for, he'd be a 36-year old role player on a bad team at the end of the contract. The Celtics can play defense with or without James Posey. Unfortunately, it probably makes more sense for Posey to go to LA. The Celtics would be better off with Maggette who could help reduce the minutes of KG, Allen, and Pierce. The key is Pierce who can play guard or forward. As close as Maggette is to Doc Rivers, it is still probably very unlikely that he will end up in Boston.

July 4, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Why is it necessary to only keep one or the other? The Celtics should keep them BOTH. Wave goodbye to Sam Cassell, PJ Brown, or Scalibrini. Ainge should make it happen.

July 4, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Defense wins championships...keep posey...besides ray who was guarding kobe at crunch time...

July 4, 2008  10:32 AM ET

if they do add Maggette it would give the Cs an even deeper bench...

"Wow, this would be huge. They could replace James Posey with a 20 PPG scorer"

Players on terrible team have stats that are HYPER-INFLATED....

There is NO WAY he comes in and averages more than 12-14 pts on this team.....Also - where exactly is he going to play? He plays the same position as pierce

_____________________________________________________________ I have a feeling this is Heat Fan again.... Brand is a free-agent and he's not going to the Heat and even if he did he would be PF not C....Chalmers is not gonna be the starting Point Guard for the Heat.

heat fan, drop dead, please....

July 4, 2008  12:07 PM ET

this guy can play the 2 and the three, i anticipate they will make an effort to keep posey and sgin maggette as well, sam will be leaving and tony allen is leaving as well so the roster will add up nicely if PJ brown ecides to stay as well, if they get another scorer it would be great as it would help to reduce pierce's and ray allns minute.... they have to fnd a way to reduce KG's minutes as well, davis was exposes for lacking in lenth, he was owned by gasol...maybe the c's might move for krsitic for davis...who knows?
