Brewers still hot after Sabathia
Posted: Saturday July 05, 2008 08:02AM ET
The Brewers remained in hot pursuit Friday evening of Cleveland left-hander C.C. Sabathia, trying to close a deal that could send top prospect Matt LaPorta, minor-league third baseman Taylor Green and perhaps a third prospect to the Indians. Reached late in the evening, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he did not have a deal in place for Sabathia. Melvin said it was his understanding that other teams were still trying to strike deals for Cleveland's ace.

I can sense a deal brewing ...

Report Offensive CommentI sense a bidding war with Cleveland ravaging the winner's farm system.

Report Offensive CommentIt's now or never with the Brew Crew. They can make the playoffs while they still have Sheets and Fielder. Good job by them, and even better if they complete this thing.

Report Offensive CommentFirst off the Brewers only make the playoffs if the Cub's and the Cardinals beat themselves into submission. They'll need to have Sabathia just to make a run at the leaders. The Brewers are still basically a .500 team. The bull pen is very questionable, and the closer situation still isn't fixed. As a Brewer fan myself, I only see the Brewers making an appearance to the playoffs if they get Sabathia and/or the Cubs and Cardinals beat themselves.

Report Offensive CommentHank is getting ready to FLEX , but will he want to afford the "Stadium After Game Buffet Bill" of Sidney and CC ?.....Melky and Robinson have begun clearing out their lockers as CC needs to spread out ....

Report Offensive CommentCome on fannation, do your job! The big story in the NYC Tri-State area this very minute is the speculation from "sources" that the Yankees have no interest in Sabathia. I just read that tidbit in the New York Times and the Star Ledger in the last 30 minutes. I'm a Yankee hater no doubt, but the Brewers angle on this is meaningless unless you know the Yankees angle (Coletrain is wondering if this really EastCoastKeith right now).
People must realize the Yankees control this whole trade scenario with C.C. It's a no-brainer the biggest Truth&Rumor today is the Yankees' apprartent disinterest in Sabathia. Come on guys...

Report Offensive CommentWhat would the Yankees have to offer for Sabathia now that Hughes and Kennedy are questionable, Melky isn't looking good and Cano is having a bad year? I don't see the Yankees as buyers this season. They need too many things to make a serious run at this point.
Wang going down was a devastating blow to their chances just like Wainwright going down was a devastating blow to the Cardinals. This is not a good year for the Yankees to start trading away the farm mid-season.

Report Offensive CommentThere are still plenty of teams interested in Sabathia. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tampa put together a good package of prospects in order to seal the deal this season. The Cubs are still nervous about their pitching. Even Boston might make a surprise entrance into the bidding.
The bottom line is that someone is going to pay through the nose to get Sabathia. Since it's mid-season, I expect him to cost more in talent than the Mets paid for Santana.

Report Offensive CommentI would really prefer that he doesnt go to anyone other than the Cubs in the NL Central. Thanks! lmao.

Report Offensive CommentAfter watching the Sox school this slob last year in the ALCS, I can't believe anybody is interested in giving up prospects for a dude that will probably weigh 350lbs by xmas. I personally hope the yanks give up whatever prospects they might have left (none that I know of), that would be schwweeeeet!
Tampa doesn't need him, they need a solid veteran presence in their clubhouse to keep the kids on an even keel as the we roll into the dog days.

Report Offensive CommentOnce again my Indians are giving away the farm! It never fails! The curse of the 70s still exists. We saw a glimer of hope in the 90s but once again I am afraid that we are slowly sinking back into being the mistake by the lake!
Tool Man Tim | 07/05/08, 01:43 PM
Report Offensive CommentYou might give the Indians a chance to see what comes out of this. They may wind up being big winners for the long term by getting someone else to give them the entire farm for a huge salary drain.

Report Offensive CommentI'm tired of seeing Boston fans say that they would not want C.C and any other team would be stupid to want him. It's plain ignorant to say it.
The Facts are that C.C is still a dominant pitcher. He leads the A.L in strikeouts and pitches for a team (the Indians) that are worst in MLB in batting average and runs scored. I believe he has lost at least 2 games this year 2-0.

Report Offensive Commentlaporta would never play for the crew as it is with braun and hart locking down the corner outfield positions, hes a good power bat that has legit potential for major league success.
gamel or green are both offensively good 3rd basemen....questionable defense......im hoping the brewers turn jj hardy into a 3rd baseman for the future and promote escobar to play short stop next year
i cant see the brewers giving more than 2 top quality prospects for a rental, no matter how good he is. altho if they do trade for CC and lose him in free agency, they get 2 compensation picks which their great scouting system personnel would love

Report Offensive CommentTHe brewers are not a .500 team. And if you actually looked at some starts u would realize that the cubs have had one of the most favorable schedules ever. Crew has had the least amount of games at home and that makes a huge difference. So to be only 4.5 games behind and over .500 is pretty damn good for crew. Dont underestimate them things are about to turn as far as the schedule is considered. So many more home games on the way and that is awesome.

He was spineless in the playoffs, looked like he couldn't wait for the manager to yank him so he could hit the buffet. You can keep him, I wouldn't give you a bag of doughnuts and an old firstbasemens mitt!

Report Offensive CommentI'd rather the brewers not trade for him b/c odds are fielder will leave via free agency once he can and la porta can rake with the best of them in the minors on top of that he's playing 1st base now now the outfield
