Big Ten winning recruiting wars
Posted: Saturday July 05, 2008 09:29AM ET
Rivals.com released their first team rankings of the 2009 recruiting classes recently. Three Big Ten teams made the cut, with Ohio State coming in at No. 1 nationally. The other two teams might come as a bit of a surprise, though. Michigan is No. 4 - a rare feat during a coaching transition - and Michigan State is No. 10, a huge jump from the No. 47 slot Mark Dantonio and the Spartans found themselves in last season.

Winning the "recruiting war" is an excellent first start, but they still have to finish the deal. In other words, they have to prove they can win against the SEC, ACC, PAC 10.....consistently, and in the big game(s). We'll see if we get overrated AGAIN this year, and then fall flat on our faces.....again. As a Wisconsin Badger fan, it can be painful to watch at times.

Report Offensive CommentYou cannot ever downplay Ohio State, but when was the last time rivals.com rankings actually were close to top-25 rankings at the end of the following season? If we put any value in rivals.com type of sites, I guess it'll be Ohio State and Rutgers in the BCS National Championships in January 2010 then?
Let's calm down rivals.com...

Report Offensive CommentGood point ECK. If you look at recruiting, Notre Dame should be perennial national champions...

Report Offensive CommentWinning the 'recruiting war' does not automatically win you big games but it does improve your chances of doing so. Look at the USC recruiting history of late.

Report Offensive CommentThere you go again with the "speed" thing. If you check the recuits 40-yards times you will see that they are just fine. The speed thing is something made up by the media and latched on to by OSU haters. It seems recruits don't buy into this anti-Big 10 poison spewed by the haters. You might as well learn to accept it....OSU has been to the Big Dance the past two years and look like they have a good shot of getting there for years to come.

You did, and just like your Buckeyes in the last two 'ships, you lost. You lost me in the sense that you claim that the "speed thing" is something made-up by the media. Nothing could be further from the truth. You have an individual's speed and you have team speed. An individual's peed is something that could be the difference between a player being drafted in the first-round or the third-round (in addition to MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!!!). Team speed is the difference betwen getting blown-out or being competitive in the BCS National Championship game.

Report Offensive CommentIt's freakin July, that's like saying that a team is better because they're winning 5 into the first quarter.

Report Offensive Commentalso I would like to point out that only 7 uncommited prospects in the rivals top 100 don't have an SEC team in there top 3

Report Offensive CommentThe only way to truly judge how good a recruiting class is is to take a look at it 3 or 4 years down the road. Many teams, including Michigan, has had great recruiting classes that never really produced.

Report Offensive CommentIt's nice to see these numbers but it is what you do with the talent you landed that is the key. You can recruit all the best players but if you fail in the coaching aspect to bring that talent out consistently it wouldn't matter in the least. All that will happen is having the moniker of "all talent, no results".

Report Offensive CommentJust like we have in the last 2 national championships, we'll (the SEC) go ahead and spot you (the big 10) a few and still blow you out.
