Canadiens still chasing Sundin

Bob Gainey is not ruling out the chance of landing prized free agent Mats Sundin by the end of the summer. But not for the whopping $10 million per season the Vancouver Canucks were offering the longtime Maple Leafs captain earlier this week. "It's still possible he could come to Montreal but not for (that price)," the Montreal Canadiens general manager said during a news conference in Montreal.

I just wish everyone would forget about Mats until something happens. Now, we have to read reports like this every hour until he finally makes up his mind and chooses a sucker to pay him 8-9 million/season for bland leadership and point per game production.

In related news, the Sun is expected to rise tomorrow morning......

Wow! What a hot commodity Sundin is these days! He didn't get this much attention in all his days of playing in the NHL!

Are sales and revenue up this year in the NHL? Or are they still in the final death throngs, and slowly falling into the abyss.

July 5, 2008  11:33 AM ET

... final death 'throngs" DEVO? Did you finish Grade 5?

You are soooo smart, DEVO! What would we do without you? We'd be bored to death without your insightful remarks, even if you can't spell worth shee*it!

Talk about overpaid. Why doesn't the NHL address some issues dealing with scoring, such as regulating goalie equipment size and eliminated the stupid octogan behind the net. If they can increase scoring by fixing some rules, then you won't see teams as desperate for scoring and throwing stupid money at players like this.

July 5, 2008  11:58 AM ET

This poor sucker is starved for attention, boston, that's the only reason he keeps showing up!

July 5, 2008  12:00 PM ET

Why the hell do thy keep chasing this guy to give him the combiantion to the bank safe...
He's getting old and he's considering retirement... Don;t you need some motivation to play like you earn thsoe $10 MIL?

July 5, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Durk..I disagree that teh NHL should NOT limit goalie equipment size. it'd increase scoring, but what benefits would that have? to me, I don't think any.

July 5, 2008  12:44 PM ET

What, this AGAIN?! Does Sundin's publicist have a second job in the T&R office or something?

July 5, 2008  01:29 PM ET

I just listed the main benefit. Teams wouldn't be as desperate for scoring, they wouldn't over pay and offer guys crazy money, which affects all the teams because players see what other players get offered and they want it too.

.....................yawn

Amen bostongm.

OLD & $10mil???? NHL will be out of biz in 2 years.

July 6, 2008  12:14 AM ET

The Toronto Maple Leafs are my favorite team and Sundin my favorite player. If Sundin goes to the Canadians, I may never watch hockey again.

July 6, 2008  12:21 AM ET

Very aerodynamic and classy bald head. Canadiens be lucky to have him, if it come to be.

July 6, 2008  01:04 AM ET

I see a long, bitter lockout in the NHL's future. When 50 point scorers make 5 to 7 million. The system is obviously broken. 2005's lockout was for nothing.

July 6, 2008  02:08 AM ET

Anyone else get the feeling that the pressure to succeed in Montreal and on Canadian teams in general is getting a bit intense? I'm feeling a little.........................Woooooozzzzyyy! 10 million sounds reasonable and yes, I'd like to buy some prime swampland in Florida at a bargain rate..
