Pernice spews hot opinions

There's never been a cage Tom Pernice couldn't rattle. Tiger Woods'? Heck, Tom once asked the PGA Tour to check Tiger's driver to make sure it was legal. (It was.) Maybe his concerns were legitimate, or maybe he was just getting back at Tiger for complaining about "hot drivers" himself a couple of years before. After all, Tom said at the time, "the difference between [conforming and nonconforming] drivers is so small, it's a joke." Pernice has also tweaked Tiger - and Phil Mickelson, too - about his highly selective schedule. When the world's two best players went as far as to blow off the Tour Championship a few years back, he called it "a slap in the face to the PGA Tour." Actually, he said, clarifying the shot he took at Tiger and Lefty, "It wasn't their fault" they were truant from the tour's final event. "We need to mandate that they need to play. We can't just let players play any 15 tournaments they want." The way Pernice sees it, "Michael Jordan didn't get to skip playing in Madison Square Garden when the Knicks were good because he didn't like playing there or whatever. Maybe we need to play more than 15 events [minimum a year]. Maybe we need to play 20. And if you're eligible for the Tour Championship and the tournament of champions [the Mercedes], then maybe you're supposed to play. "I have a lot of respect for our title sponsors and the volunteers and the amount of effort and time and money they put into these events. It would be nice for Tiger to play all over, not just 15 or 20 venues in his career."

AGAIN, golf is not a sport, it is a RECREATIONAL GAME. I've played the GAME, I know what it's like, and it's a lot like frisbee golf, just something you do to pass the time with your buddies. It can also be used as a sales tool to help you sell......lawyers makes under the table deals.......doctors exchange surgical techniques.....and the 18th green for high school kids having sex.

The guy does have some valid points, especially when you figure in all that goes into setting up and running a tournament.

I agree with him on one point for sure. As a PGA member you should be required to tee it up in at least 25 events per year. Wow,so only have to work slightly less than half the year. This means the top names on tour will have to start playing some of the lesser known events. More fan's get to see their favorite players, more tournaments get to have a better quality field. I know the top players will not all play the same 25 events so this will ensure that just about every tournament has an above average field.. It will also make sure to keep the top sponsors in the game because they know their tournament has a better chance of getting a quality field.

what a stupid comment. im pretty sure tiger and phil work harder than you ever have in your life, regardless of whether its on the range or in a tournament. they are spending more time working on their games when they arent playing in tournaments. obviously, i would love to play golf for a living, but you cant complain that they dont work enough.

Smack this guy up I should. Tiger has brought more money and attention to the sport than anyone in history. The paydays are higher for everyone on the tour due to Tiger.

So winning means your opinions are correct and not winning means your opinion is wrong? If his points are valid, they are valid regardless of how good a golfer he is.

I highly disagree that the players should be required to participate in a certain number of events.

The players are independent contractors and should be allowed to play when they want where they want. They have sponsor obligations that they attend to and that means making it to your sponsors events whenever possible. They all pay entry fees to each event, so if they choose not to play and event they shouldn't be required to do so.

If they were employed by the team, like baseball, basketball, hockey and football players are, then they should be required to participate. Golfers are not employees of the PGA Tour. They are independent contractors. A golfer only makes money from his endorsements and the money he earns by his participation and placing in events. He does not get a salary from the PGA Tour.

While I don't think it should be required, I do think certain events should be attended by all available and qualified golfers whenever possible. The Tour Championship is one of these events.

chapmaja, nice comment ~ you'v e earned your avtar.

These guys do pay their own freight. No other sport puts the financial risk for just participating on the participant. If a guy does not make the cut, he may not even wind up with enough $ to pay for his trip. in the pre tiger days my company used to have our conference at a well known tourney. we'd talk to some players. some were hand to mouth when their game was off.

Pernice is a d bag. shut up and win something.

Maybe this loser should ACTUALLY WIN A TOURNAMENT before criticizing anyone! what a d o u ch e!

I thought the headline said spews hot onions, I was wondering if they had the same problems that tomatoes have been having.

About the story... I've never heard of this scrub, he's a nobody, when he becomes a somebody I bet he would skip a few lame tourney's too
