The Post has learned the identity of every All-Star Game vote winner from the AL and NL for the July 15 game at Yankee Stadium and the starting pitchers. Major League Baseball will announce today that Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez will start for the AL club at short and third, respectively, and that there are no Mets among the NL starters. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will be named with the other pitchers and reserves. The plan is for Rivera to pitch the final All-Star inning in Yankee Stadium history. Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb will start for the NL and Cleveland lefty Cliff Lee goes for the AL. The defending World Champion Red Sox will start Kevin Youkilis at first, Dustin Pedroia at second and Manny Ramirez in left. David Ortiz was voted in as the DH but won't play because of a wrist injury. Hideki Matsui would have been a candidate to replace Ortiz, but he is on the DL with a knee injury. Ortiz's likely replacement will be Texas' Milton Bradley. Other AL starters are Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki in center, Texas' Josh Hamilton in right and Minnesota's Joe Mauer behind the plate. The NL's infield consists of Lance Berkman at first, Philly's Chase Utley at second, Atlanta's Chipper Jones at third and Florida's Hanley Ramirez at short. Former Yankee and current Cub Alfonso Soriano starts in left, teammate Kosuke Fukudome will be in center and Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr. gets the nod in right. The Cubs' Geovany Soto is the starting catcher.

Jeter does not deserve it. Michael Young would have been a better choice.

Over 1/2 those guys dont deserve to start - its a popularity contest, not All-Star Game

July 6, 2008  08:36 AM ET

The NL outfield is weak - very weak. None of those guys should be in there. Xavier Nady, Pat Burrell, Ryan Braun, Carlos Lee, Aaron Rowand, and Matt Holliday are all having better years.

At least the voters got the infield right.

I never thought I'd say this, but Drew should start ahead of Manny. He's having a better year.

By the way, thanks Chicago Cub voters. If you do make it to the WS, will you still be happy about stuffing the ballots?

July 6, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Oh YES, we will be quite happy. Pretty sure the Cards play in the NL and have just as legitimate a shot at making the World Series.

So where were the Cards fans? Cubs fans got the 25 vote maximum that every team's fans were given. Certainly not the Cubs fans fault for taking advantage of it!

July 6, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Does anybody really think it is about who deserves to go based on their play? Or has been in the past? .252 hitters like Ortiz get named for other reasons ( I know he will not play), It looks good on a baseball card and for agents come contract time, that is all. As far as who gets home field advantage for the world series, it is as fair as the old rotating system previously used. Haven't watched the game in years, and do not intend to..

July 6, 2008  08:59 AM ET

excellent points 50 year.....agree on both....

July 6, 2008  09:00 AM ET

You're talking about an irresponsible tabloid rag here that got Kerry's pick wrong to run with him for VP in 2004 on its front page. And those were "news" reporters. You want me to trust a bunch of geeks with sports information unofficially? No. I always watch the All-Star Game but the hoopla before it makes me sick.

July 6, 2008  09:01 AM ET

By the way, San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez is the BEST first basemen in the NL. Maybe when the voting crap is taken away from us stupid fans, the rosters will be just and reflective of who the true All-Stars are. Hell will freeze over first.

I hope the NL is blowing them out so Mariano will be making a mop-up appearance.

July 6, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Don't they have computers in St Louis? Where was your fan support? Don't start whining about stuffing the ballots, it's called voting!

July 6, 2008  09:11 AM ET

aarogod

Just because you have a chance to do something doesn't mean you should. Yes St. Louis has a chance to go to the WS. Perhaps that's why we didn't want to stuff the ballots. Home field is an advantage - especially this year.

July 6, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Jeter is the most over-rated player in MLB today. Thanks, fans, you have absolutely no clue....just a popularity quiz. Take the voting away from the fans, MLB, please!!!

This makes no sense whatsoever!

MrMiyagi

I guess you haven't seen the home away splits for teams like the Red Sox, the Cubs, and Tampa. They are extreme.

Besides, what NL fan wants to see us lose another all star game in the interest of stacking the team with home town players? That makes no sense to me.

Majot League Baseball will never take the All-star voting away from the fans. If that were the case, then baseball should form a All-star game committee to select the starters and reserves. The fans voted who they want to see, not on who having a great first half.
Base on his stats, Derek Jeter should not be in the All-star game. But like I said earlier, the fans voted him in. Anti-Yankee fans wouldn't vote for Jeter, Yankees fans will. Plus the All-Star game is in Yankee Stadium this year. You think Yankees fans like me will voted for someone else besides Jeter? No Way.
Can the National League show up for the All-Star game this year? Forget winning it, how about the NL be in the game for once. The AL is 10-0-1 since 1997.
