Piston rethink adding Maggette

When free agency began, the Pistons had no intentions of using their full mid-level exception for one player. But the Pistons might have a change of heart, especially if they have a chance to land a player such as Corey Maggette. The Pistons have had at least one conversation with Maggette's representatives since it became clear that the 6-foot-6 small forward is willing to consider accepting the mid-level exception, which is expected to be worth about $5.8 million.

Seems to me the Pistons are a day late and a dollar short--since Maggette has narrowed his choices to San Antonio and Boston.

Whatever happenned to the trade rumors with Pistons?? Now they wanna settle for Maggette?? Looks like end of road for DET with BOS and CLE getting a lot better and experienced. And don't count out the Magic. They are a more experienced now

o well bummer.

Detroit's days are far from over. Maggette is a good player. He's no superstar, but when you are picking him up as a free agent there is absolutely no question that he is improving your team. I don't see it as settling. Plus, Dumars already stated that any major changes to the core of this team would obviously come through trades, CM provides more depth and fleverage in any trade conversation.

Yup, he was Clippers leading scorer last year on a real dog of a team. Maggette can run the breaks and dunk it in. I don't know why there's not a whole lot of buzz on this guy. He's a great SG/SF kind of player.

Very interesting - opting out of the 8 mil for next year to accept 6 mil per year for next 5 years or so. Should have stayed with Clips had another good year and next year when teams with cap space would have jumped on you. Now make you midlevel and be happy about it.

OR maybe he actually is thinking of a ring, rather than just money....Unlikely with NBA guys, but maybe we do have an exception here

Orlando will be making an aggressive offer this week.
C D Howard
PF R Lewis
SF Turkolou
PG Nelson
SG Maggette

Tonny Battie off the bench, with Boggans, Dooling, Gortat, Redik, Lee (rookie)

Can the flopping city pistons please break up!

July 6, 2008  03:58 PM ET

Also, you always take a long term contract over a one year contract. if you suffer a career ending injury or an injury that may refrain teams from offering you a long term contarct after your last year, then you are left hanging. Mr. Livingston from the Clippers is a good example. It may suck taking less money per year, but I take 30 millions over 5 years over 8 million for one year any day. That is why player's agent look at a long term commitment first and always like for their players to opt out of a last year contract for a logn term one. Free Agency 101.

I thought he wanted a long term, better paying contract, which waz why opted out in the first place!!! He is set to make $7 mil next year in LA, right? Why not stay in LA & try to be a champion? I said 'try' b/c they have a very good chance, provided Brand signs on and every stays healthy.

This guy is confusing the hell out of everybody, including himself!!!

July 6, 2008  04:19 PM ET

"Provided Everyone stays healthy", that is.

July 6, 2008  06:28 PM ET

and this team has a habit of staying unhealthy

July 6, 2008  09:25 PM ET

Only add Maggette if it means trading Prince or Hamilton.

July 7, 2008  02:37 AM ET

Is it just me or is Maggette getting a little more hype this offseason than he really warrants?

July 7, 2008  07:58 AM ET

What a consolation prize...

Maybe sign and trade as part of a Melo anthony package.

Or the free agent class next year would dwarf him...
