GM feud! Lowe calls Burke a 'moron'

The feud between Ducks General Manager Brian Burke and his Edmonton counterpart, Kevin Lowe, that has simmered for a year is at full boil again. Largely staying quiet for a year while Burke repeatedly criticized his decision to tender lucrative offer sheets, Lowe shot back, calling Burke a "moron" following comments made by the Anaheim GM to The Times earlier this week. In an interview with an Edmonton radio station late Friday, Lowe sharply responded to Burke's assertion that the offer sheets the Oilers gave to Thomas Vanek and Dustin Penner last summer have driven up the salary structure for young restricted free agents. Buffalo matched the Oilers' seven-year, $50-million offer sheet for Vanek, but the Ducks passed on Edmonton's five-year, $21.2-million offer for Penner. The Ducks have signed Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry to similar five-year extensions worth nearly $26.6 million. Lowe finally countered Friday, saying Burke should blame those who handed out contracts to Columbus' Rick Nash, Boston's Patrice Bergeron and Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk before the 2004-05 lockout.

Burkie, get over it. It's been a year.
Seriously, I think Lowe has a point here. Big bucks contract were here before him. If Lowe is stupid enough to offer Penner $5 MIL, it's his problem!

Ducks, again.

I wonder how much longer Lowe will be around now that the Oil have a new owner?
Too much longer in my view.

Wasn't one of the the reasons we had a lockout was b/c some teams (like the Rangers and Flyers) just threw money at people and other teams couldn't afford to keep up with them? I say let the 2 GMs duke it out in the schoolyard and be done with it.

July 6, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Burke is not a genius. He could've signed Penner, but chose not to. What did he do instead? He signed Bertuzzi for the same money. A young power-forward in the making vs a washed up power-forward?Hmmmmmmmmm. Tough choice!! Burke also traded away their young talent in McDonald to clear cap space. 2 young talents gone in less than one calender year. Do Leafs fans really want him coming to town? What has Burke done anyway? Besides inherit a Cup team? Ok,ok. He got Pronger. Only because he wanted out of Edmonton. Nobody makes that trade IF Pronger doesnt want out.

Lowe's blaming other GM's? Way to go about business Lowe!! Have fun trying to make a trade with those clubs!!! K-Lowe has now alienated 4 clubs. That limits his effectiveness as a GM. Not good.

These guys should just scrap in a No-DQ fight to the death cage match. I'd watch it on Pay-Per view.

I was reading CNN and I just thought of an option for big market US teams to get yourng talent. We can identify the good youngsters in Canada and elsewhere. Well, those real capitalists in Asia can show the way:

"North Korea has admitted to abducting 11 Japanese citizens -- to teach its spies Japanese language and culture -- but had insisted the abduction issue was resolved."

We can rule in hockey.

I like this on-going feud between these two. It sure beats the Cassidy controversy on fannation...or does it?
Burke's smarter than you think BGM...He is currently working for 2 NHL teams. I wonder how long it's going to be before the Ducks and Leafs swing a trade?
Now that, would be interesting.
Lowe does have to go though...Hey, I'm a poet and didn't know it.

July 6, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Baunded:
How smart is he. He's working for two organizations, but only getting paid by one. I guess his work with the Leafs is like charity work, like when you volunteer at the soup kitchen to help the down-troddden.

July 6, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Looking at this picture of Kevin he seems a little "Lowe" on frontal hair !!!

July 6, 2008  11:19 AM ET

He's doing the comb-over. That classic hair-style. LOL.

July 6, 2008  11:42 AM ET

He's right though... Burke IS a moron. Kevin Lowe ain't that much better though.

July 6, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Is there more history to these two other than the Penner offer sheet or do GMs routinely indulge in this kind of public squabbling? This is two grown men who are executives in multi-million dollar organisations and they are behaving like a pair of toddlers. I guess K-Lowe just got sick of being the object of Burke's vitriol, but personal insults and name-calling never reflect well on the people involved. He had some good points, but calling Burke a moron was not his finest hour IMO. Not to mention that Burke is probably rubbing his hands with glee having got this reaction, and more of the publicity for which he seems so hungry.

Baun-ded, the Cassidy controversy is mind blowing .... and not in a good way.

July 6, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Good point there. I guess Lowe won't be around with the new ownership fr too long. Too many enemies to do good trading.

Burke is the most overrated GM in hockey. Ran the Canucks into the ground and left nothing for the following gm. Inherited a good team in Anaheim that won only because of moves the previous GM made. Lowe is very competitve by nature and has been putting competive teams on the ice year after year. Before the lockout he had the smallest budget in the league and still iced competitive teams. Now that there is a level playing field he is showing what he can do. One win away two years from the cup, and lets face it, they would have been much more competitive if Pronger wasn't such an idiot. Signs a long term deal than after one year decides he wants out. Lowe now has his team on the verge of being a top team again. So i love it when he blasts Burke. I cannot wait till Burd goes to the leafs and ruing that franchise.

July 6, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Why did we have a lockout again? What a couple of tools.......

Lowe did have one great comment though in that interview: "He won a Stanley Cup??? Big deal, I've got 6." That is how you shut someone up.

July 6, 2008  03:59 PM ET

People need to take a pill here. Anyone who says he paid too much for Penner is obviously ignorant to current NHL salaries. Is Malone worth $5 million a year? We know great players like Crosby and Malkin make those around them better yet we still think their linemates are stars.

Lowe had every right to call Burke a moron, he should of done it sooner. Anyone who thinks the new owner in Edmonton will fire Lowe is an idiot.

As for critisizing other GM's, do you think the Oilers trade with Calgary where Keenan is the coach? Do you think the Luongo trade was a good one? I guess speaking the truth is a bad thing now.
