Edmonds, La Russa trade barbs

Jim Edmonds spent his first few weeks as a Cub asking the media to stop referring to him as a former Cardinal, hoping Cubs fans would accept him for who he is, not for the rival player he was. But when Tony La Russa shot back in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, saying Cardinals fans should "honor his request [and] ignore the fact that he was ever here," Edmonds ripped his former manager for comments he called "the most asinine I've ever heard." So what was their relationship really like? "It has been great," Edmonds said. "It always has been great. He gets a little excited when this series goes on, and I know the media takes its toll on him, so I'm sure he got misinformed over something he heard about me not wanting to be part of this organization. "In the history of baseball, I don't know if I ever heard that before, so I don't know how anybody would put that with my name. It's disappointing that someone would throw those accusations out there."

I guess Edmonds and LaRussa are the only ones with a sense of humor. I'm surprised either of them can keep a straight face while feeding these media bozos the juicy story they all so desperately want.

I never imagined I would take the side of Edmonds in 2008 as a disgruntled Padres fan, but on this I absolutely am. LaRussa is one the biggest **** in all of pro sports who never gets called out for being a complete piece of crap. In this instance, Edmonds is completely right, and LaRussa is once again out of line.

By the way, can anyone tell me of a pro sports figure who got as big a free pass from the public as LaRussa did for being passed out drunk at a stop light?

LaRussa is probably the most arrogant ahole in the majors right now. Besides being a lightweight drinker he also suffers from memory loss any time someone asks him about steroids and his involvement as far as the Bash Brothers in Oakland and Big Mac again in St Louis. You want to act like a moron, fine, we will treat you like one.

"About the only one I can think of is OJ."

Good one BillWrigley. Getting away with double-murder is a much bigger free pass. Although, in the court of public opinion, LaRussa may win at least a free pass over O.J. I actually sometimes think I may despise LaRussa more than O.J.

BillWrigley, you're obviously another one of these guys still upset over O.J., word of advice: get over it.

Your bias aside, O.J. got a free pass from the Justice System and while most, if not all of us can agree he did get away from murder, the gentlemen's post was asking if he got a free pass from the public. You single-handedly prove that's not the case. O.J. has gotten FAR from a free pass, he will always be a murderer in many eyes, so I don't see the free pass my friend. We actually agree on O.J., only I've let it go, you should try it sometime.

As far as LaRussa goes, he has been given a free pass, but then again it seems everyone who plays or manages in St Louis gets free passes, god forbid to level an ounce of criticism on any of them. LaRussa is an arrogant jackarse who thinks he invented the game. Edmonds seems to be a class act, I can't say the same of LaLoosa

Edmonds also threatened to punch Tony in the face over the comments. Does anyone think he was serious? They were both having fun with the absurd media. The fact that Edmonds made such an absurd statement proves how serious the two were about this nonsense.

TLR and Edmonds have a great deal of respect for each other. They always have had a great deal of respect for each other.

Edmonds is really saying, as this picture shows, "I am a human being" !!! I'm not some bird or a baby bear - "I am a human being" !!!

LaRussa is THE best there is, hate all you want.

And welcome to Jimmy Dramaqueen Chicago!

July 6, 2008  03:27 PM ET

Hey Bill, if it was a joke then I'm the first to say my response was unjust.

I just get tired of those who don't let it go. If that's not you then my apologies my friend.

P.S. LaRussa is not the best there is, calm down Beeotches, there's a guy in LA with more rings that may have something to say about that. Plus Torre won with pitching and defense, not steroid-infused lugheads.

Let's be fair Moe. Torre won with double the payroll of any other team. A big checkbook may not guarantee success; but, it gives you a much better chance than a small checkbook.

July 6, 2008  10:53 PM ET

Hey Cards fan, terrible thing when the owner is a tightwad, too bad. LaRussa is an ahole through and through, an arrogant spongehead who condones behavior that ends up killing players, A real clASS guy.

July 7, 2008  12:18 AM ET

LaRussa is cocky but he's a good manager and has one of the best pitching coaches around in Dave Duncan who has done absolute wonders this year with that rag-tag-a-muffin staff they have.

I don't know I could be wrong but I've always like Edmonds, not just his style of play but the way he carries himself. He's misinterpreted...just ask Darren Erstad who had Edmonds run out of Anaheim only to see his team lose a huge lead in the standings at the wire. I guess Erstad never looked in the mirror to see who the real cocky guy is/was.

Cursing the lord, is he?

July 7, 2008  04:25 AM ET

WHAT??

July 7, 2008  11:24 AM ET

In defense of both of them, LaRussa was probably drunk and Edmonds is on so many painkillers he probably doesn't even remember playing for the Cardinals.

Well, it's no secret Tony has a drinking problem!
