Four teams chasing deal for Sabathia

The Yanks would love to acquire a starter before the July 31 trade deadline and C.C. Sabathia is the biggest name in the market. Nevertheless, the Yanks want the price to fall precipitously, which is unlikely. The Cubs and Phillies also were described as more motivated to land Sabathia than the Yanks. And foxsports.com reports the Dodgers are heavily involved in the sweepstakes as well.

Every Cleveland newspaper and radio show is talking that the Brewers are leading the CC race. But some how they aren't in this story. Poor reporting!

July 6, 2008  09:37 AM ET

The team that could use him most to put them over the top are the Dodgers. They are only a half game back in the pathetic NL West and only a solid starter away from putting some ground between them and the rest of the worst(West) MLB has to offer.

July 6, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Where are the Milwaukee Brewer's name in that artical?

July 6, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Great reporting - The Brewers lead the race with Matt LaPorta as the cornerstone of the deal. All they are working on now is the additional prospects that would go along with LaPorta in the deal.

The Yankees are not even close in the race for CC - they don't have the prospects the Brewers have available to give up...

July 6, 2008  10:45 AM ET

The Brewers have submitted their offer for CC.

It Includes star prospect Matt LaPorta, Taylor Green and potential star Lorenzo Cain.

According to the report the Brewers will hear back from Cleveland anywhere from Sunday to Tuesday...aka before CC's next start.

Also, the Brewers are the only ones to submit a final offering (not just proposed trades). So that pretty much makes this article obsolete.

I will tell you why the Brewers are gonna get CC.

Cubs- NO PROSPECTS. End of story.
Phillies- they have low level prospects, nothing major, and they are all pitchers.
Yanks- Wont seperate from their top prosepcts
Dodgers- Well, they fall out of every trade race the past 20 years.

The Brewers on the other hand have a lot of prospects and are willing to seperate from them.

Buster Onley reported that the brewers might not be willing to give up LaPorta and another top of the line prospect which cleveland wants. He said if it does not fall through it becomes a 2 team race between the phillies and dodgers.

Not at all. In most every case, Sabathia will leave the team he is traded to and test the market. Thus money is a non issue...

July 6, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Talent is the currency at this point. I can't see anyone getting him unless they believe they have what it takes to win it all this year.

I agree that C.C. is nothing more than the ultimate summer rental. He's going to test the FA market this winter. The big bucks will then get him long term. Yankees? Probably. Big bucks they have by the truckload.

July 6, 2008  02:59 PM ET

The Brewers would be idiots to trade Matt Laporta for 2 months of Sabathia. They could make this trade and still not even make the playoffs. And even if they do make the playoffs, they have no closer - they would get bounced early. Then they get nothing for a guy who many think is a sure-fire prospect who might play 12-15 years in the majors.

They would be better off trading Prince Fielder for a couple of good pitching prospects, and bring LaPorta up to play first. Then they could make a run at it for the next few years, with all of their young talent playing into their prime.

July 6, 2008  03:40 PM ET

C.C. could be a difference maker. Remember, he's only 26 years old, has won a Cy Young, and has pitched in the playoffs. He could be someone's No. 1 for 10 years.

I think he goes to Milwaukee.

The Dodgers held their prospects but had to play no names and 2nd tier prospects when the vets hit the DL. The subs for the most part outplayed the "untouchables". Look for at least one of the formerly off the table players to be offered.

I wouldn't be surprised to see LaRouch/Kershaw go to Cleveland for Sabbathia.

It is poor reporting but the basis for the report is a column by Joel Sherman of the NY Post who is an idiot. Sherman says the Yanks will sign CC in 2009 and there is no basis for that comment. Sabathia will likely sign with the team who acquires him via trace.

Sherman says the Yanks did not get Hohan Santana because of "cost". That's a lie - Hank wanted Johan; Brian Cashman did not want to part with the two "phenoms", Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes - who stink.

I say CC is going to Milwaukee unless some other team jumps in.

July 6, 2008  04:47 PM ET

It is poor reporting and the original report was made by Joel Sherman of the NY Post who is an idiot. He is saying the Yankees will sign CC Sabathia as a free agent in 2009 which makes no sense. Sabathia will likely sign with the team who, he is traded to.

Also, if you read Sherman's article, he mentions that the Yanks did not get Johan Santana because of "cost". What nonsense. The Yanks did not get Santana because Brian "Brainless" Cashman did not want to part with the two "phenoms" Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes. Since when have the Yankees cared about "cost"??????????????????????

I think CC is headed to Milwaukee and will likely sign with the Brewers.

Great reporting, Joel!!

How can you say that the cubs have no prospects?

Felix Pie,Josh Vitters,Tyler Colvin,Jeff Smarshjdza,Cedeno, we Have a ton of young good players and dont forget about Rich Hill even though he has had a bad year doesnt mean he cant turn around......

If the cubbies really wanted to get CC we could

BIG Z and BIG CC would be amazing!

July 6, 2008  04:52 PM ET

He would not put the Yankees in the play offs this year. They need more than him. Better to ride out the big contracts, look at your own and go from there..

July 6, 2008  05:07 PM ET

I disagree about CC and Yanks - a good starting pitcher means a lot and I do feel he would put them in a much better position to make the playoffs...

I don't think he wants to play in NY anyway but are you suggesting the Yankees make no moves and write off the season???

There are other pitchers and/or players the Yanks can get but it does appear the Brewers are getting Sabathia and good for them!!

July 6, 2008  05:43 PM ET

Cubs have some good prospects but the Brewers are loaded with sought after positional players that would be the jewels of many systems.

Cate

Everything I've seen about Sabathia says he's going to sign this winter with the team offering him the most cash. That will not necessarily be the team renting him for the summer. CC is going to auction his services for the next 5 to 7 years. You're dreaming if you think the Brewers will have the inside track just because they give talent away to get him.

Based on that I do think the Yankees and Boston have the inside track simply because they have the most money.
