Did NASCAR blow Gordon call?

Every car owner who had his race car damaged in the wreck that ended Saturday night's race should send the bill for fixing it or replacing it to NASCAR. Those wrecks never should have happened because the race should have been over when Jeff Gordon spun as the green-white-checkered began. NASCAR tells you it sometimes has to throw a caution for debris because officials aren't sure if something on the track is dangerous or not. So how could NASCAR be sure Gordon could get his car going again before the entire field came back around to where it was sitting, or that Gordon was not in need of any assistance? It couldn???t, of course.

For one thing, NASCAR had plenty of time to wait and see. He spun to the inside on a restart out of the way of traffic. That left NASCAR with 50 seconds before the field would get back around the racetrack to where Gordon was. It gave them about 30 seconds to wait and see if Gordon could get the car going. NASCAR did the correct thing and waited to see if he got his car going before throwing the yellow flag.

This article is nothing more than the Charlotte Observer wanting to start something when there isn't anything to start. If they want to use this argument, then every time a car spins they need to throw the caution which they don't do, despite the fact it seems like they do. While I don't agree with the majority of things NASCAR does, I do agree on this.

The problem the writer for the Observer has with the call is when it was earlier in the race and a car spun the caution came out immediately. Every time there is a GWC it ends up with 8-10 wrecked cars.

Inconsistency and favoritism reign supreme. Take Michigan for example. When Carpentier spun, handing the win to Jr., it was in the exact same fashion as when Hornaday spun in the Truck race the day before. When Hornaday spun there was no caution thrown.

If anyone was Handed the Win, It was Kyle, Why Because I don't like him!
Plain and Simple!

i think that if a car is down far enough and doesnt effect the rest of the field then is should cause a caution. there are WAY to many stupid causions for NO REASON... and the only reason this story is news is because its CRY BABY GORDON!!!!!

Sounds like another article by a guy who knows nothing about racing to me.

Just another way fro NASCAR handing a win to the Japanese cars again. It is pretty damnd apparent the TURD camp bought someone in the NASCAR org...it is no wonder other manufactures are looking at pilling out of this BS

Please overlook the spelling -- that's what happens when the Irish gets up!

I feel that the call was incorrect even though everything that first poster (chapmaja@yahoo.com ) said is true about the time delay and everything else. I also understand that NASCAR really didn't want to ruin it for the fans and throw the caution 4 seconds into the GWC. As for RIR12 - the previous caution was thrown quickly cause the car spun in the middle of the track and not down out of the way. The problem here is that, Gordon spun out and then didn't come on his radio for something like 14 seconds. He could have been hurt and as NASCAR has stated driver safety is the # 1 concern. As soon as he spun and came to a stop they should have radioed him. With no response, the curtain window not dropping and his car not moving, the caution should be thrown IMMEDIATELY.

I hate Kyle Busch and either way he probably still would have been the winner so please don't think I am trying to get Edwards to win. My guy Jr. needed the extra lap to gain 2 more positions on the track. Point is the flag should have been thrown. Fans would have hated it and NASCAR would have been booed but oh well.

With the field having to come back around to where Gordon was the flag should have been thrown.

EarnTaz88 -- I agree. The only problem I have with Toyota and NASCAR is what was revealed the other day. Toyota was allowed to run their new motor this year. It gives them 15 more horsepower over everyone else. Dodge, Chevy, and Ford will be allowed to run theirs next year.

HOW IS THIS FAIR???

NASCAR blows it again... They threw it earlier in the race for a 1 car spin that was way out of danger and that never even came to a stop like Gordon did.

If I was one of those car owners that got my car totaled at the end of the race, I would have been pissed. I actually said that while watching it Saturday night explaining it to my Sister who has never really watched, there was probably about $3 million worth of tangled cars in that last wreck.

July 7, 2008  11:44 AM ET

They made the right call, there was enough time to see if he was going to get restarted again.

July 7, 2008  12:08 PM ET

It's more of a matter of inconsistency to me as I mentioned earlier. Hornaday's and Carpentier's spins were carbon copies, yet the yellow was thrown for Carpentier's while it wasn't for Hornaday's back at Michigan. Also, they threw the caution right away at the end of this race when the wreck occurred but refused to do so in last year's Daytona 500.

Thats the slogan of Nascar Sith "We are very inconsistent".
