Lowe: 'Who wants to live in Detroit?'

Joanne Ireland of The Edmonton Journal recently wrote a story looking at the off-season decisions of Marian Hossa and Jaromir Jagr. An excerpt: [Marian] Hossa didn't pick lifestyle either; he picked hockey. "Who wants to live in Detroit?" said Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe. "What this week has done has put us back on the map. As someone said to me the other day, 'I'm sure there was a time in the '80s when everyone wanted to play in Edmonton.' "Detroit is like that now -- and we want to get there. We want to get to a place where there are no challenges."

I agree. Never been there, but I hear it really sucks from the sophisticated people that have lived in that dwelling of a city. They need better everything from what I heard and researched. Hopefully the Tigers can get their act together, but not Sheff for he is a total idiot and has no idea where he bread is buttered. That is a shame too.

dude, comin from someone who grew up in the ghetto of Baltimore...Detroit makes my old hood look like the Beverly Hills. Drivin round the Great Lakes I thought Toledo was bad till I saw the arm pit of Michigan...Detroit. The Wings might have a good hockey team, but even as someone who admits to bein from the 'hood' that city be scary.Kevin Lowe aint be trippin. Detroit be lookin like freakin Beruit

I've been to Detroit 3 times... Super bowl tailgating, hockey this past year, and driving through. It sucks, but how much better could Edmonton be. By the way, is it me or is Lowe saying a lot of stupid **** lately?

July 7, 2008  07:22 AM ET

Lowe should get the "Just SHUT UP" award. Not only for these comments, but for every other stupid thing he has said recently.

As for Detroit. Yes, Detroit itself SUCKS, however the surrounding area is not that bad. Most of the players live in areas like Howell, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester, Troy. These areas are much nicer than Detroit. The nice thing for Wings players is that it is about an hour drive into town and the arena is right off the Expressway. You don't need to go through the ghetto of Detroit to get to work.

The biggest issue with Detroit is the fact the mayor can't keep himself out of some sort of trouble. It keeps going down the ladder as well. The City Council and School Boards are in legal controversies as well.

Does this IDIOT really think a Wings player would live in detroit? As with any large city there are good places and bad places. The surrounding suburbs, where all the players live are beautiful. Try Ann Arbor ,Livonia Troy Birmingham on your searches to name a few. There are miles of Great Lakes shorelines as well as multiple inland lake areas. So all this bashing is B.S

Oh and we do have a hair club for whiners in Detroit next to city airport if the man chooses to get rid of that combover

July 7, 2008  07:42 AM ET

Yeaa, Lowe's been talking alot of ****, being a real jerk-off!

I guess you'd be bitter too, if your team sucked that bad!

July 7, 2008  07:53 AM ET

No offense, but this was ridiculous.....

July 7, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Other than Bob Seger, probably no one.

July 7, 2008  08:13 AM ET

I agree, that none of the players actually live in Detroit. However....who wouldn't want to play in Detroit? Illitch is one of the best owners in sports and he know how to take care of his players. He and Holland will keep this franchise competitive for years.

BTW, HumptyRavens Fan: I was hanging curtains for my wife this weekend and they were fom, no ****, JC Penney's. Didn't get a chance to peruse the catalog but she said it couldn't compare to Hochman Kohl anyway - plus you could catch a flick across the street. And who in the name of Moe Drabowksi is that on your Avatar??? Looks like Sammy Davis Jr. wearing a Jackie Kennedy style pillbox hat. You go, dude.

You forgot Kid Rock and Emenem. Of course they both moved as soon as they could afford it but.....

July 7, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Haha, I'm from Detroit. Theres no jobs and the people kinda suck but it's not that bad unless your in a gang or looking for a fight. Definitely not my city of choice but there is much worse out there. Plus most of the sports teams are great.

TRY READING THE ARTICLE. HE isnt Bashing Detroit all he is simply saying players dont go to detroit just for the beauty of the city they go there because they know they have the best shot to win the cup and the oilers were like that in the early 80's. Growing up in windsor and being born in Edmonton i must say Edmonton is more beautiful but Detroit is one of my favourite cities when it comes to sports. Stop taking things to heart he wasnt bashing the city and if you thought he did then he just bashed Edmonton for being that city years back.

July 7, 2008  09:25 AM ET

I'm not, im just saying that for the people who think Detroit is some crazy ghetto. Relax man it's all good. Oh, and I did read the article by the way...

July 7, 2008  09:27 AM ET

The title of the article is meant to p/io people. Those of us with larger IQs would read past this sort of thing. Does Rupert <urdoch own this paper? This has NY Post written all over it.

Nobody lives in Detroit, just as no one lives in Da Bronx or Inglewood. Athletes and anyone else with a steady paycheck live in the burbs. Detroit has no desireable inner city. There is no mid-town Manhattan or Back Bay equivalent. In the Detroit area the further you are from downtown the pricier it gets. In all cities those that can afford to live in the suburbs, but most cities have at least one desireable area withing the city limits. Not so with Detroit.
