Packers' options for Favre

The Green Bay Packers have four choices when it comes to Brett Favre and his apparent desire to return to the NFL. There's no timetable for a solution to this issue. The outcome depends largely on how hard Favre pushes his desire to return. The first option seemingly is out of the question. All indications are the Packers have moved on and have embraced life after Favre. The coaching staff has. Coach Mike McCarthy, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements spent the offseason shaping the offense around Aaron Rodgers' strengths. At the NFL annual meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., in early April, McCarthy discussed how the offense would be different with Rodgers. Whereas Favre's best throw was the slant, Rodgers' best throw is something different. The second option -- cutting Favre -- could become a reality if Favre insists he wants to play. If the Packers aren't interested in giving him away, they could explore the third option -- a trade. However, a deal could be difficult, especially if teams felt the Packers would have to release him anyway, and he could be had without giving up anything. The fourth option -- convincing Favre to stay retired -- seemingly would be the best for the Packers. This way, they wouldn't come off as being the bad guys for driving Favre out of town and to another team, something that likely would anger a large portion of Packers' supporters.

I love Favre, but he said he was done, he needs to move on. All he is doing is giving the Packers organization more of a headache.

Favre could start a reading program for the thousands of illiterate, adult Mississippians

July 7, 2008  07:24 AM ET

If the man wants to play, either let him back or cut him. Who are we to tell someone not to comeback? And did anybody really believe he would stay retired?

July 7, 2008  07:25 AM ET

Aren't we running with this awfully hard based on nothing of substance? This article is assuming that he wants to return and only questions how hard he'll push. We've got herwegostillers post above me knocking Favre for not moving on and giving the organization a headache. All this based on reports that didn't come from Favre himself, and over his statements that it's all rumor and there's no reason for people to be talking about this. I agree that it would hardly be surprising for Favre to be having second thoughts, but it really seems like we're getting ahead of ourselves.

run away brett. run away. you're a has been. end while you still have some dignity left.

July 7, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Brett is hardly a has been. Not sure what you are basing that one, but he was the 2nd best QB in the league last year and would still be a top 5 this upcoming season. That leaves 27 teams who would upgrade their rosters with Favre.

July 7, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Has been? What did you fall into a drunkin coma after the sox won? He had a Pro-Bowl Season last year, and he did it without a running game for most of the seaon... He obviously can still contribute at a very high level.

July 7, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Favre is far from a has been soxwin, just think of how many less picks he would have thrown had he known the defensive plays in advance?

That being said, please Brett, stay retired. Nothing left to prove, had the Packers not won the Super Bowl during his career I'd completely understand. Allow the Packers to gracefully move on without forcing their hand and yet spend another Green Bay offseason dominated by stories regarding your status. We all know you don't care for Aaron Rodgers, but it's his time and I'd like to see what a less risky QB can do for the Packers given the running game and improving defense.

No one loves Favre more than I do, it's time to cut the cord. Enjoy retirement and the money you earned.

Please Brett don't make us have to watch you in a diffrent jersey, like Emmitt in Cardinals red, Dorsett in Denver, Rice in Seattle, Namith, Dickerson, or the many others who we just seem to forget those years with that other team. Stay retired and ride that lawn mower in Mississippi. it does not snow there either.

Let the man do what he wants too. If the Packers dont want him back; they can cut him. I know if someone told me that I had to quit...I would not be too happy about it,

July 7, 2008  09:15 AM ET

It's fine with me that Favre wants to keep playing, but if no one picks him up that's his problem. Whether the Packers want him back or not, they still need to give Aaron Rodgers time on the field. Favre can't play forever, and that's exactly why Rodgers was drafted (three years ago). Let Rodgers start, it's about time.

This reminds me of people who say Elvis is coming back.

Bring him back and let him sit the pine behind Rodgers.

A. His starting streak would have been over ANYWAYS if he retired.

B. This is Rodgers team now.

C. Favre will end up playing anyways after Rodgers gets hurt.

Folks, Favre did this on himself. This is coming from a Season ticket holder Packer fan.

Nothing more than a rumor as far as Im concern. And soxwin07, at least this guy gives it his all on the field unlike Moss who says, 'i play when I wanna play' and walks off the field with 4 secs left in the game while cashing a 9 million dollar check.

A. -- Not sure about this as far as the record goes
B. -- Agree - As indicated, Mike and the boys have built the team around Rogers
C. -- Very likely ... if he doesn't learn how to scramble around a bit ... he should have learned this from watching the #4

July 7, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Seriously...just go hunting or something, Brett.

July 7, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Favre is such a drama queen. He smells football season and now wants to wade back into things, not thinking about anybody but himself. (Then again, any type of thinking for Favre is a triumph.) Get over yourself, Bret, AND STAY RETIRED.

The guy has earned the right to do whatever he wants. He is Green Bay football.
