Adu linked to Monaco move

Currently in Portugal with Benfica, Freddy Adu has been linked with Monaco in recent days. Murmurs of a move began circulating yesterday when local newspaper Monaco-Matin released a statement made by de Bontin that one of America's most promising talents could be signed. His addition in Monaco would be something of a coup for the French club, who have struggled to find a consistent goal scorer in recent years. It would also be a major surprise given Monaco's relative lack of success since reaching the Champions League final in 2004.

at this point i dont care where Adu goes, as long as he gets playing time.... the kid has too much talent to waste away on the bench...

Funny thing Otergod. I was going to say the same thing. As long as he's on a decent team and he gets to play then it really doesn't matter where he is.

I got to agree with Otergod and Keeper. As long as Freddy gets consistent playing time it really didn't matter where he goes.

if benfica were smart, this would simply be a loan.... a good portion of Benfica fans love adu, and see him as a quality prospect to their team.. i wonder how they'd react if they find the newest boss plans to sell him?? get him a season or 2 of experience, then bring him back to make an impact for your team (assuming he pans out)...

No idea why he doesn't play at Benfica. He's a prolific goal scorer. If he can get playing time, he can be a star and a fan favorite in Europe. Monaco doesn't have forwards that can score on the level that Adu can. He can get playing time at Monaco.

With a good supportive cast Freddy could excel in France.

July 7, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Could be a good move. If he's not getting the time at Benfica, Monaco is a good place to go. They're reputable in developing players, IE, Sebastian Squillaci, Patrice Evra, Ludovic Giuly..

Monaco is not a French club, as the rumor states. They just play in the French league. You would not call the FC Toronto an American team, would you?

5 years I can understand, but TWO DECADES? As in, TWENTY YEARS?

If that's true and Arsene isn't just exaggerating for effect... then damn, I rather think the move to the Emirates wasn't worth it. At all.

Oops. Wrong section.

Freddy just needs some PT. Period. Where ever that is, so be it. Just give my boy some legitimate PT.

July 7, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Yes, as long as the kid gets some playing time any move at this time would be great. But he definetely needs to stay abroad to gain experience.

July 7, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Hopefully Adu displays the potential everyone see's in him, if he gets the playing time he needs and deserves. A move to Monaco might be the right thing.

Good point Ronaldinho's Dog. It is an independent principality.

July 7, 2008  11:57 AM ET

adu is the most overated player i have ever seen, theyve put years into him and he still does nothing. so much for his so-called potnetial.

July 7, 2008  12:01 PM ET

the french league would be a good move for him, hope this pans out, he needs more PT

July 7, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Ronnie's Dog: Yes impressive. Monaco is not a French club but merely plays in the French League. Do you figure they just forgot that or just aren't accustomed to paying attention to detail since they make half their stories up anyhow? Well, regardless, 50% of the games will be played in France... It like calling Cardiff City an English Club...

I guess were being a little bit of geography snoots--but I tend to be sensitive about that as well since I read years ago that 50% of Americans polled couldn't locate the USA on a world map. 25% of them pointed to Australia or Southeast Asia! Good grief... Hope they never get lost...

glory boi 22- either you are being very sarcastic or very ignorant.... its hard to tell these things over the internet :-/

I would say Ignorant Otergod

There are rumours that Freddie could also end up with Scotlands Rangers, on a loan deal with Benfica
