1 big trade is all they should be making, with 2 picks in the top 15 they need to focus on grabbing at least 1 of the top 5 rated defensemen in the draft, if not 2. The Oilers aren't going to be able to get a defenseman of the calibre that they need through trades so don't waste the picks on a middle of the road blueliner.

Oilers have been doing the prospect thing for too long, how bout getting good sometime in the near future? trade for some offence, and actually cough up the dough to keep the talent around for a while

Hey.. Isn't it great to see that people come up with rather smart lines like "Oilers Suck" Must say, thank you for that. But I wonder.. Do you live in an NHL city? Could you possible be another leafs fan? When was the last time your favorite team was in the Finals? Lowe doesn't get the credit that is due to him, he is a savy GM and will make the moves to make the team better. Seems right now he was rather smart for letting Smyth go. But we've been doing the prospect thing for a while? Seems the prospect thing had us within a period of a stanley cup, can't see flaws in that. While we do need offensive help, we are more desperate for blue line support, and we will get it this year. While everyone is focused on Drury, and players that may be "stars" the Oilers have always done well with under the radar players. Can anyone tell me a more underated captain then Jason Smith?
Thanks for all the input with "Oilers Suck" but without back up the statement, seems rather uncalled for, considering your probably a leafs fan, when was the last time you won anything important?

oilers sukk/roberto:
You may be a Canucks season ticket holder, but you spell like an elementary schooler
its
"suck" not "suk" or "sukk",
"definitely" not "definatly",
"understand" not "understant",
"freaken'" not "friken",
"lately" not "latley",
"they're" not "there",
"beat" not "beet", and
"premier" not "premiere".
Actually, I retract my initial comment. Your spelling is worse than that of most Canadian elementary schoolers.

Since I'm on roberto's case, I should correct my own misspelling. In the previous post, the "its" should be "it's".

I see the thread has strayed a bit here. Let's get back on track. The Oil should keep their first pick and look at trading their next two first rounders either seperately or together for a top D and/or top centre. We all know the biggest holes the Oil have is on the back end and up the middle. While we do have many good prospects, we need that top end person to help mold those prospects into the players they are expected to be. That being said, Markannan is gone (UFA) to be replaced by either Dubnyk or Deslaurier as an understudy to Roloson. UFA's to sign - Sykora and Peterson. Let the rest find someplace else to play. Prospects who should play next year - Syvret, Gilbert, Pouliot, Jacques, Bodie, Stortini, and Schremp.

The biggest weakness in the Oilers game last season was their blue line. Because of a defense that couldn't move the puck the forwards were forced to play closer to the defense, which in turn made breaking out and attacking the offensive zone more difficult. So if the Oilers get help on the back end I expect them to be much better offensively as a result.
But drafting a defenceman won't help out now, or likely even in the next 2 years. As far as prospects on the blue line the Oil have several good ones including Gilbert, Roy and Chorney, add in Greene and Smid and there really a need to add another 2 prospects.
Take one of the picks, any one of them, package it with a roster player or two and get a deal done. Ideally for help on the back end, but if not then a top line center and keep making moves until you get the players you want.

This is universally considered to be a weak draft - meaning GMs around the league aren't going to be willing to give up as much this year for a 1st round pick as they would have in other years. They DO need defence, and it SHOULD be their first priority, but getting someone for a first rounder this year is gonna be pretty tough, as far as I'm concerned. Still hope to see the Oil do well though, and Lowesy is definitely a good, smart GM, just had an unbelievably unpredictable year this year. I'll be cheering for him and the rest of the team next year for sure

premiere, you better lay down while your dreaming ! lol naslund is washed up but im glad you like him cuz i wouldn't want him on my team.Ales hemsky has more talent in his pinky finger than both the sedin sisters. and he's only 23 years old. the oilers have truck loads of cash to spend on ufa's and just as much excess of draft picks to bundle up in a trade the sky is the limit for the oil. pS say hi to sami salo he's my favorate. lol but naslund is a close second - good on ya !
