Lindland: UFC contracts are illegal

Republican House of Representatives candidate and - of course - highly respected middleweight Matt Lindland believes there is something very wrong with the contracts from MMA's top organization. The UFC contracts are illegal. Based on the Muhammad Ali (Safety) Act, you cannot be the promoter and the manager at the same time," Lindland said, "If they are telling you who and when you are going to fight, they are the manager as well as the promoter." Lindland also said that one fighter in particular is planning to test the Act in court. "I believe that is what Randy (Couture) is saying as well."

Just like a democrat,Try to put down progress so your fat arse can sit on the couch and collect food stamps and welfare.

July 7, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Just like a Republican to think people LIKE being on welfare and food stamps while your fat arse votes to repeal taxes that you have an obligation to pay for living in this country. Middle-class crunch. Look it up fatty.

There you go...the politicians are getting into baseball, football, and now MMA. What's next, golf?

July 7, 2008  01:07 PM ET

Not getting into the Political stuff, but I think right now UFC contracts needs to stay the same. The sport is still growing and you cant have fighters not wanting to fight for what ever reason

July 7, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Unfortunately he is right. There's a reason they passed that act, and judging by the text, this looks like a violation of it. I guess we will see.

July 7, 2008  03:00 PM ET

If the contracts violate the Ali Safety Act, they do so regardless of the person's pilitical affiliation.

July 7, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Bernardo...with no political side being taken, don't Democrats have an opinion as well? Let me guess you are just a liberal who will go against anything a Rep. says just based on the sole fact he claims to be Republican! What if a Dem. said it? You would have agreed.

I love the ufc and have been a fan since before dana white got involved in 93' , but i feel for fighters like Couture they have no job security even if they keep winning fights they can get dropped just because the fans dont like them. And guys who have faught great for years if they lose a few fights in a row they can get blackballed and forgot about. Also Couture has made the ufc in the past 5 years and been there greatest and most decorated champion and 1st time fighters in this company like Q Jackson Kro-Cop and Shogun get more money for there 1st fights the Couture did for his title defense at the same time. Thats not right.

The Ali act does not automatically apply to MMA. This is needless political meddling.

July 7, 2008  09:36 PM ET

Mathew, Randy negotiated his own contract, so he really has no one but himself to blame for signing it. Nobody put a gun to his head nad made him sign it. Dana White doesn't force anyone to sign their contracts. They are free to go and try to get more moeny somewhere else once they have completed their contractual obligation to the UFC.

jason how many times r u going 2 say Randy negotiated his own contract? He out preformed his contract. The ufc doesn't have a problem letting go all these fighters go befor there cotract is up that loose. This happens ALL the time in sports! The bottom line is money EVERYONE wants more and Randy with his popularity and talent is easly worth more.

July 8, 2008  04:39 AM ET

Its a double edge sword, I hope MMA will unify a little better then boxing....Right now it UFC, EliteXC....and we'll see if Affliction stays as a promoter.

July 8, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Chokeit, I will say it as long as people talk about Randy and his contract and him deserving more money. And not the UFC cannot let a fighter go if he had a contract. They simply don't sign fighters to new contracts if they aren't performing well. The same as any other sport.

If Randy was worth so much more than he should have asked for more before he signed the deal.

July 8, 2008  10:54 AM ET

For the record I am a Randy Cotoure fan. I think he is a great fighter and I hate to see him not fighting when his days as a fighter are clearly numbered, but he put himself in the position he is in.

July 8, 2008  04:18 PM ET

When Randy sined that conterct he was 43 and had been KO'ed twice by Chuck. HE OUT PREFORMED this deal!!! And yea the UFC doesn't sign fighters the new deals when they don't preform they just don't book any fight 4 them anymore.

July 8, 2008  04:37 PM ET

YEah, that's exactly what I said. He signed a 3 fight deal. What do you mean he outperforned it? Are you saying he came out of retirement thinking he wasn't going to take the title from Silvia? Randhy had all the negotiating power when he was coming out of retirement, because people wanted to see him again, and the HW division wasn't strong. I am sick and tired of athletes in all sports signing a contract and then whining about it before it's over. You signed the contract, finish it. If he had lost to Silvia and his opponent after that the UFC would have still been obligated to give him a 3rd fight to finish out his contract.

July 9, 2008  01:10 PM ET

I am a HUGE fan of Randy's I was even at the sportfight that was deticated too him. But everyone thought he was over. Losing twice 2 the lightheavyweight champ. And going against Silvia who didn't go out the win fights but just not loose the belt. He was a huge underdog! He took anydeal that he could. And then beating the he{{ out of Gonzaga! Nobdy realy thought that was going the happen.

July 9, 2008  03:31 PM ET

I thought he could beat Silvia, although him putting Silvia on his butt with a punch in the opening seconds did surprise me a bit. As for Gonzaga I had only seen him beat Mirko so I didn't have any expectation of who would win that fight.
