Dodgers respond to Torre's advice

The All-Star break is seven games away, and Andre Ethier thinks the words of Joe Torre are finally starting to sink in to the Dodgers' clubhouse. Torre said that in the last week, he's noticed a change in the Dodgers, who face the Atlanta Braves tonight to begin a homestand that will take them into the All-Star break. In the seven-game trip that concluded Sunday with a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. "These guys are into the games," Torre said. "It's a change that I sense right now. To me, it started this road trip." Paying attention is what Torre has stressed to his players. He's told them to pay attention to what's happening in the game regardless of whether they're playing. He's told them to pay attention to the situation when they go up to hit.

How thick headed are these young players? Don't you think they've been told this since legion ball?

CardFan2,

I agree!! I was expecting to hear that Torre had a serect formula on how to win some games. Being a Dodgers fan I'm glad we are playing in the JV NL West.

They need to pick up a big bat. Andruw I have held my breath long enough. What happened? Is this David Duval all over again?

I am a lifelong Yankee fan....
Hav no animosity for Torre.....he did bring us 4 titles.....
BUT

He won with unbelievably gritty gamers & great seasoned pitchers on the Yanks.....other than those teams- he has NEVER shown the ability to win- either before NY or since 2000.

He more than other managers NEEDS leaders on his team-
he is far too laid back- relying on the players to self-motivate-
He has NEVER been a great x's & o's guy-

I wish no ill will towards him, but an glad he moved on-

Torre is greatly overrated as a manager.

The Dodgers have a chance, with the D-Backs collapse, to make the playoffs. Let's see if Joe T. can pull his group together.

Tell it like it is

As a Padres fan who does not exactly like the Dodgers, I have to believe Torre will pull this group together and the Dodgers will be going to the playoffs (while the Yankees won't).

Torre is not overrated as a manager, he is overrated as a strategist, he manages people real well.

Either way, they need to strike now while AZ collapses and take hold of the NL West which is doing BEYOND horrible this year. Jones also needs to pull his head out of his #@$ and start hitting! They CAN play against the better teams (i.e. Cubs, Angels) they just need to stick to the fundamentals and have the young players that everyone wants and be consistent.

I thought that Joe Torre would bring stability to the Dodgers that Phil Jackson brought to the Lakers. The year that Phil left the Lakers, Kobe had to be ooached by the likes of Rudy T and Kurt Rambis, both losing seasons.

Where's all the assistant and hitting coaches? How can the Dodgers get more of the "Yankee" type players that Torre is used to? Oh well, we Dodgers fans need to be patient while this guy try to win. It's been his first year?

Sage advice from a man who single handedly is responsible for the worst blowup in MLB history (talkin' 'bout the Sox-Yanks come from behind debacle that led to the Yanks demise). Maybe he should've told that to the Yanks.

July 7, 2008  04:45 PM ET

Overrated? Yankees had the same league-high payrolls from 1978-1995 and no titles, and missed the playoffs often. With Torre, they won four over the next five years, and were in the running every year. Insane to say he is not a great manager. Just like Bobby Cox is not great. You dont know what you have until it is gone, and the Yanks miss Torre now even if it was time for him to move on.

Ingenius these words are supposed to be?

"Pay attention"?

July 7, 2008  05:22 PM ET

Hitting, please we need some ^%^$* bats, How mucha longer do Dodger fans have to suffer with the same problem? How long has it been since we dont have an RBI,HR hitter? I can only think of Piazza and way back to Darryl Strawberry.

July 7, 2008  07:44 PM ET

Its time they make a dam move and get anyone, and i mean anyone with the ability to hit more then 20hrs a year and drive in more then 80 runs. The last great hitter we had was Gary Shefield, and Shawn Green, and Green was only good for about 2 or 3 of the years he was in L.A. I was hoping Kemp would be that guy, but maybe next year. Im just tired of watching this team struggle to score runs for the last decade or so.

When 'clueless' Joe says he loves Jeff Kent & Juan Pierre's batting approach, he is officially an idiot.

You don't need a lead-off hitter whose lead-off OBP < 0.300, and you don't need an aging cleanup hitter with OPS around 0.700, either.

People who keeps on playing these two punks must be as pathetic as 'clueless' Joe.
