Tiger won't attend Ryder Cup

As much as U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger hopes otherwise, Tiger Woods doesn't seem all that interested in serving as an inspirational resource when the Americans face the Europeans at Valhalla GC in September. Asked during a Monday teleconference if he might accept Azinger's offer to join the squad as an unofficial assistant captain, Woods gave a non-committal answer in a tone different from his replies to previous questions. "Because of my procedure, I'm not on the team," Tiger said, referring to last week's knee surgery, which will sideline him for the rest of 2008, perhaps beyond. "It's about those 12 guys. It's not about me. I'm not part of that crew." Such reluctance is understandable, and those who know Woods, Azinger included, could not be surprised by his response. For the same reason Tiger withheld information on his torn ACL and double stress fracture of his tibia until after the U.S. Open, it's difficult to imagine him hanging out with the Yanks in Kentucky. The distraction factor caused by his presence becomes too big a story, especially once the competition has begun.

Maybe you should go Tiger and then all the press coverage will be about you and not how the Americans are losing yet another Ryder Cup.

Woods has already said that these cup events mean next to nothing to him.

And, he is right. They are a side-bar event.

The Americans would probably fair better anyway by not playing their Prima Donnas. Just bring in the blue-collar type guys like Kenny Perry, Verplank and the like.

My nightmare is that some clown will suggest to Azinger that he brings John Daly onto the team. Maybe he can inspire them by hitting golf balls off of the tops of beer cans.

Boo Weekely for the Ryder Cup!!!!

July 7, 2008  12:20 PM ET

Sad that they cannot focus on other great players and leave Tiger alone. He is a legend and probally the best to play but now is the time to focus on several players and keep golf alive. You know it needs help when they still have to mention Tiger while he is out 6 months because no one else is news...

Jonis,

Daly can't go.

Ryder Cup chefs don't have time to perfect those "101 menu ideas for the diabetes ****" recipes.

WELL, NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO STEP UP. AND THE MEDIA WANTS TO SELL THE NEWS.

I MEAN PHIL THE CHOKE CHOKE MEISTER DOES NOT WANT TO STEP UP...

July 7, 2008  02:10 PM ET

Makes sense to me...why would anyone after having knee surgery want to walk around a golf course with a million cameras in your face and fat drunk fans constantly yelling "WHOOOOOO Tiger, YOU DA MAN!!!" Yeah...I'm talking about you Kentucky...where the beer will flow and the guts will flop.

I'd stay home, take a pain pill, watch the tournament...and smile because I know I have beaten more than half these guys with a bum knee.

July 7, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Agree with rory. Stay home and let the wife admisiter some physical therapy.

Legend? Not possible until many years from now.

July 7, 2008  03:45 PM ET

Are there any other Players on the Tour??????

July 7, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Maybe they will actually win if Tiger isnt there...........How many have they won WITH him??? He doesnt go at the Ryder Cup with the same tenacity he does with other tournaments because he is not getting paid.Which is why the Americans dont win it. Most of the team only cares about the money, and not the honor and pride of playing for their country.

July 7, 2008  05:58 PM ET

Azinger wants Tiger to help lure media and ratings. Tiger would rather sit back and relax than have to answer the "Hows your knee" question 2000 times.

July 7, 2008  06:10 PM ET

LEAVE THE TIGER ALONE... THE PHIL CHOKE CHOKE MEISTER WILL BE THERE, AND WE'LL SEE WHAT HE WILL DO!!

Maybe Brett Favre can take Tiger's place for a little while. Brett is looking for something to do since he retired.

July 8, 2008  03:24 AM ET

Tiger was heard contemplating - "go to the Ryder Cup or spend some quality sack time with my "knock-out wife"???

July 8, 2008  03:24 AM ET

I so agree. Tiger goes to tournaments to win. this would be a side show and that ain't tiger. I even wonder if he'd be watching on TV. Get well Tiger. oh...and helen from keller.... bwahahahaha!!

July 8, 2008  04:30 AM ET

Stupid, The guy is weeks of the operation table. Tiger take your time.
