Crean face recruiting obstacles

Perhaps the most important month on the basketball recruiting calendar begins today. Coaches can begin making the rounds of the big-time summer basketball tournaments and get a first-hand look at all the blue-chip prospects who will someday become available. Except for IU's Tom Crean, who is being sent into the recruiting wars with a bow and arrow and a can of Mace. While every other coach has 20 full days to recruit during this period, as per NCAA guidelines, Crean will have only seven. (He was given back 10 days after Kelvin Sampson and Dan Dakich used all 14 that were available after sanctions, but Crean already used three this recruiting period.) While every other coach will have three of his assistants on the road, Crean will have two: Tim Buckley and Bennie Seltzer. He lost his third coach's days when former assistant Rob Senderoff was sanctioned by the university. And lest we forget, Crean has now lost three scholarships for 2008-09; one was lost as a penalty against Sampson, and two more were lost when IU pre-emptively penalized itself in anticipation of a dreadful APR (Academic Progress Report) number. Did I mention that Crean is allowed to host only two recruits on official visits? IU penalized Sampson, reducing the visits from 12 to six. Sampson used all six, and Crean was given only two back.

Crean had better be wearing an apron everyday because the mess is only going to get worse. Good luck, Tommy Boy.

Maybe he needs to contact Dennis Francione about what to do when one takes a head coaching job and the morass is worse than what one thought it would be.

When did Tom Arnold start coaching?

I, for one, will be pulling for Coach Crean to put IU back where they belong in college hoops hierarchy. Right beside UCLA, UK, UNC, KU, Duke, and Co. He has a very tough row to hoe, thats for sure.

LOL...that's good stuff.

That's not Tom Arnold, that's Bill Lumberg from Office Space!

July 7, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Good luck dude...
Maybe IU is regretting getting rid of THE Coach. Seems like they did a jam up job with his replacements

Is that the guy from Arli$$?

I realized I still have 4 years of NCAA eligibility left, where the hell is IU?

July 8, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Crean is a good coach-
he succeded at Marquette-
he will do FINE at IU
- it'll take 3-4 years, but they'll be back

July 8, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Crean had like 1 or 2 TOTAL Tourney wins at Marquette during a 9 year span without Dwayne Wade and I seriously doubt he'll hit the lottery jackpot again by finding another Wade. Wade wasn't a bigtime recruit coming out of the Chicago 'burbs. Realistically, a blind man could have coached Wade once his body grew into a physcial specimen in college. Hoosier Nation may love him now, but those fanatics will be calling for his head after multiple 1st and 2nd round Tourney exits.

The upside is a talented player will get to play right away for a storied program ...That would be my sell to kids, hey do you want to sit the bench for two/three years someplace else, or get your showtime now???

July 8, 2008  11:48 PM ET

All Hoosier Haters beware.IU may be down right now but we will be back.Coach Crean did an amazing job of recruiting at a small school like Marquette.Imagine once he gets IU's mess cleaned up,what he will do at Indiana.I laugh at all of you that think Indiana is done.Keep dreaming folks,The Cream & Crimson shall rise to the top once again!

Yeah, well I would like to see it before we plant a colony on Mars.

Ridiculous comment watson. You know, and we all know crean will resurrect IU. If he can have success at marquette, what do you think will happen in Bloomington?

July 12, 2008  12:08 AM ET

Hey Watson, you are awfully quick with you wit!I bet you are proud to pump gas for a living.

Rebuilding isn't new to Tom Crean. He rebuilt Marquette because he knows talent. He recruited Dwayne Wade when no one knew who DWade was.

Crean will get it done at IU. Tick tock.
