Tough times at NFL Films?

There are fewer faces these days around NFL Films, which in part promoted the dinosaurs and the calls of concern. The company laid off 21 of 283 employees earlier this year in the wake of suggestions that its epic style of filmmaking had fallen out of favor with viewers and the NFL's corporate hierarchy, which is focused on pumping up the struggling NFL Network. "It seemed to be sort of an emotional and sentimental thing with people," Steve Sabol said. "They've been calling to ask if we're doing OK." In fact, Sabol said, things are fine. After a year in which the NFL Network seemingly struggled to find a role for NFL Films, the company is developing three new series that will air on Thursday nights this fall.

Personally I love NFL films style and hope they stay.

I think part of the downfall of Inside the NFL is that they went away from this style to a more web 2.0 approach where game highlights because an afterthought and many lame stories on 20 year retirees fighting cancer became the norm.

Yep, gotta say I have always loved the NFL films. How are the young guys supposed to learn about the History? How the NFL network can't find room to air these films is crazy!! seriously, the crap they recycle on that network makes it hard to tune in to. They wonder why the station gets No viewers.

NFL films has always rocked. Even when I didn't have to pay extra for the NFL network, I didn't watch it much. Ex jocks and their overrated opinions, blah blah blah,

I liked the NFL films. you know that voice anywhere. at least these guys are compitent unlike some of those retired players who can barley put together a complete and coherant sentance. just what we need on NFL Network 12 hours of 7th round picks working out live on T.V. followed by "games of the week replays" followed by some fat guy talking about some scrub signing and getting so excited his man boobs pop out of his shirt. wonder why the network is struggling.

NFL Films is awesome. I love the voiceover descriptions. Great voice.

The NFL is becoming more and more distant from its fan base, Losing NFL films will only hasten that departure. The irony here is that NFL Films helped to bring the game closer to the fans when I was younger, and now that the NFL has gotten greedier, they are going to get rid of one of the things that helped make them so rich

July 7, 2008  10:11 AM ET

C'mon Spiny you should understand "stepping stones" or using a "base" till you get what you want. They are just "refining their position". Ha Ha Ha

July 7, 2008  10:36 AM ET

I couldn't agree with you more Spiny Norman. It is amazing how the NFL has abandoned its fan base over the last few years. Moving a lot of its showcases to the NFL network is a huge mistake and unless that network becomes a part of a basic cable package, it will never achieve the success that the NFL dreams it will. We are getting very close to pay per view for NFL games.

Like so many other areas of society, it's all about corporate sponsors and their millions (or should I say minions). Coming up next on Fox, the Diet Super Pepsi Bowl with the Home Depot halftime show followed by the Dodge/Chevy/Ford/Kia post game highlights and the Pizza Hut finale. Hey, can we get some more commercials during game play?
