Sticking points to Sabathia deal
The Indians are close to trading C.C. Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers. It could happen Monday, said a source. The key to the deal is outfielder Matt LaPorta. He could be playing left field for the Indians by next July. The sticking point has been the two other prospects the Indians would receive in the deal. The Indians preferred one of them to be shortstop Alcides Escobar, third baseman Taylor Green or outfielder Michael Brantley. Escobar and Brantley are with LaPorta at Class AA Huntsville. The Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel reported on its blog Sunday that the deal was done. It said the Indians were getting LaPorta and two unnamed prospects for the reigning AL Cy Young winner. Physicals and paperwork were the only thing, reportedly, in the way of the deal being completed.

The Indians are a bad team! Maybe they can get some prospects that will help out down the road. The Brewers are hoping to make a run this season because they could be without CC, Sheets, and their prospects next season.

why sign him for like 4 more months, and then he will be gone. this is a very stupid deal, and doesn't make sense, they are going to get rid of half of the farm team to get this guy for a couple of months???

FMSD,
LaPorta was hitting .288 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs in 84 games for Huntsville. He was a top 10 pick a few year ago (7) I think. It too much to give up for a guy you're probably not going to re-sign. It's big run in the playoffs or burst for Bud's boys.

I'm thinking of changing my Avitar to the chief wahoo that the Indians used back in the 70's. If they are going to start dealing quality players that help the club win for 1 guy in AA and two others that obviously aren't worth mentioning it would appear they are going back to their old way of doing things by getting rid of good players for **** just to save some bucks. I've been an Indians fan now for 40 years and this deal is crap. Our bullpen couldn't save a game if their life dependded on it. Borowski is up for assignment, we have the new guy that they will try to make a closer. Betencourt and Perez don't look like they have a clue these days. Byrd, Laffey and Sowers are the AL HR providers so what does Cleveland want in a trade....An OF in AA and and possibly a SS or a 2nd baseman?? What they should have done was trade Bettencourt, Perez, Laffey, Byrd, Borowski and Sowers and see if someone wanted to give up a middle reliever and possibly a closer. I'm so disgusted. I can't believe my team had their head up their arse with this deal. Should have kept him and paid him and done something with the bullpen on the offseason.

brew crew did the right thing as did the tribe. the tribe obvisouly didn't think they could afford CC so they picked up some young talent might as well get something before he leaves. not to mention it was highly unlikely they would make a move in the AL central.

For all of you Ney'sayers, I think this was a smart move by the Brewers organization. For the people that are "sad" that the Brewers did not give up anything but minor league prospects, that is what the guy was worth. He is a 1/2 year player for both the Brewers and would have been for the Indians. Face it Indians fans, he turned down 47 million at the beginning of the year. Would you rather 2 draft picks next year or 3-4 scouted and proven minor league prospects now. Cmon, Prince Fielder in the mix?!?!? The only 2 people on the Brewer 25 man roster that would be out there as tradeable is Hall and Weeks. Nobody will touch Hall because of his large salary. With Laporta going to Cleveland I can see a multi-year contract for Fielder right around the corner. He was Prince's ONLY threat at 1st base in the Brewers minor league system. Folks this sends a message to the fans outside of Milwaukee AND players that Milwaukee is dedicated to winning.
If all else fails and CC and Sheets leave, Brewers should get about 5 picks next year in the draft for them. With the Brewers EXCELLENT record of scouting players, this could be a blessing in disguise!

You obviously don't know a lot about the Indians ball club and their players or talent. Because this is NOT a good trade for Cleveland, I hope it falls through but it doesn't look like that will happen.

Why have a picture of A-Rod for your avatar? Looks to me like the Yanks are nowhere close to leading the division with the billion dollar man that went to the team for a ring.

LaPorta is a premier prospect but the positions he projects to at the major league level (1B, corner outfield) are taken up by some pretty decent players for the Brewers (Prince, Braun, Corey Hart) making him the perfect chip for this trade. Even after this trade I think the Brewers still have enough to make a trade for a relief pitcher (Fuentes maybes) without really crippling the farm system.

Half their farm system??? Don't know much do you. The Brewers system is regarded as the most stocked system in baseball. Their AA team had 10 All Stars. They didn't give up our 2nd and 3rd best prospects (Gamel and Escobar) who the Tribe wanted badly. Some say Gamel might be a more complete hitter than LaPorta. They gave up a fraction of the farm system, which will get reloaded next year since they will have supplemental picks for CC and most likely Sheets.
Know some facts before posting a dumb comment.

why is it not a good trade? they didn't think they could afford him they knew they were going to lose him to free agency? why not get something for him now because you really don't think you playing for playoff spot at this point do you? v martinez is out for who knows how long, hafner....a bust. i just think its highly unlikely that you will be a contender this season. i agree they should've kept him if they could've afforded him or wanted to put Johan type $$ into a player but shapiro is not willing to do that and typically has never done that. you should trust his judgment. he wasnt the GM of the year last year for nothing

Brewers better win this year because they are about to go a LONG time out of contention again when both Sheets and CC bail.

I think that the Indians could have gotten more. Or, at least should have gotten more. But, only time will tell as to how good this deal is for both teams.

The Indians got enough. They got the sheer pleasure to play some of their games at Miller Park last year. What is worth more then that? Maybe a sequel to Major League with the Indians playing at Miller Park instead of old County Stadium!
