Pens: Malone not worth $30M

What would have been the masterstroke of Penguins GM Ray Shero's plan, was the signing of Marian Hossa, the crown jewel of free-agent forwards. Only one of the most bizarre contract negotiations in the history of professional sports stopped Shero from fully executing his plan. Who ever would have thought Hossa would leave a minimum of about $40 million on the table? Who would have thought he would reject a Penguins offer of about $7 million a year for five to seven years to accept a one-year deal from the Detroit Red Wings that will pay him $7.4 million? Hossa is either obsessed with winning the Stanley Cup and correctly believes the Red Wings give him the best chance. Or he's stark, raving mad. The notion that Shero would have tried harder to keep Ryan Malone had he known he would not sign Hossa is not correct. The Penguins did not see Malone as a player worth more than $30 million, which is what it would have taken to keep him.

No offense Bugsy, but you're not worth 31.5 over 7 years. 4 million per would have been a big maybe. It always begs the question, how much is enough? 6 years 22 million would have been a nice deal, a hometown discount and the chance to play for the team and possibly win the Cup for the team you grew up watching.

I don't have any ill-will towards Malone for getting his payday. Good for him. He can be replaced cheaper. The Pens have too many big guns on the roster to be handing inflated contracts out. I think the Pens are managing the cap and balancing the talent quite well. Malone leaving isn't the slap in the face that was Hossa leaving.

July 7, 2008  09:53 AM ET

I agree with Durk about Malone, but why is Hossa considered a "slap"? Did anybody really think he was anything more than a rental (in this day and age anyway) if Pittsburgh didn't win? Tha's just my opinion myabe, but I never thought he was staying. He was playing for a payday originally, and he realised he liked this whole playoff thingy.

BETTMAN S***S

July 7, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I thought at first that he was a rental and would leave, but as the playoffs progressed and he made comments about playing for a winning team for less money, he created the hope that he would stay. Detroit obviously does have another shot at the cup next season, but so do the Pens. To say that Sid, Malkin, Fleury, and the rest of the team doesn't have what it takes after getting to the finals is the slap. The Pens have made some good moves in FA, they should be better next season.

July 7, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Yeaa, i kinda thought he would stay, but i guess he thinks Detroit has a better chance at the Cup

July 7, 2008  10:24 AM ET

I think Hossa should have just been honest and said he was going to go, that way, the Pens could have looked elsewhere from the start. Detroit has as good a chance as anyone, but repeating is hard. Lets not discount the valuable experience all the young Pens got in this year's playoffs. Look what they did with the experience they got last year.

Pens will be fine. Have to play the game on the ice...not on paper.

July 7, 2008  10:39 AM ET

The Penguins know it! The Bolts know it! We all know it! And, Ryan Malone knows it! But, is he going to give the money back? No way! He's laughing his arse off as he drives his SUV stuffed full of money all the way to the bank!

And, oh, BTW! It is Kevin Lowe's fault Tampa gave him that insane contract! Just like it was his fault the NYR and Philly gave insane contracts to Drury, Gomez and Briere last year! LOL!

No way is Malone worth that kind of money. 5 yrs .... 17.5 that was the MOST he should have gotten anywhere. There is no way this guy is worth more than 3.5 per.

gameon

yeah, the blades on the skates cut right through the paper!!!

July 7, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Of course Malone is not worth the $$.

But then again if somebody offered it he must be. Marketplace determines value.

this just in;
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Owen Nolan, the 36-year-old power forward who spent last season with the Calgary Flames, signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Minnesota Wild on Sunday

July 7, 2008  11:30 AM ET

No, Malone isn't worth that much. And that is nothing against Malone. The Bolts offered him that so he would be a fool to turn it down. He was a CLASS ACT the whole time he was in Pittsbrugh. So, when he, Roberts, and Hall are announced in The Burgh...all you will hear is a whole lot of cheering and clapping. If not a standing O. All 3 were class when they were here.

(Keeping in a Blazing Saddles theme)
You've got to remember that Bettman is just simple commissioner. He is a man of the game. The common clay of the new NHL. You know... a moron.

July 7, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Exactly, though to here some of the people here you'd think Malone was the only player on the Pens. I literally got in several arguments about why keeping Malone over Fluery or Malkin was stupid. Just because he is from Pittsburgh doesn't mean you should break the bank on a role player that I feel only had the season he did because he played on Malkin's line.

July 7, 2008  11:52 AM ET

2.75 a year for 2 years for Nolan?? With his whopping 16 goals and at 36 years old? Now THAT is a waste of money.

T rocks is right...Malone always was a class act.
