Leaner Williams turning heads

Mike Williams lost the weight and regained his swagger in the process. He's faster, happier and once again optimistic about a career that went nowhere in his first three NFL seasons. But for his sake, to keep him motivated, the Titans receiver is going to pretend he's stuck in a rut. In 2005, Williams was a first-round draft pick by the Lions, but he was released after two seasons. The Raiders gave him another shot, but he lasted just six games in Oakland. That's when the Titans jumped on board, signing him at the end of last season, hoping for bigger things in the future. Today, the 6-foot-5 Williams is down nearly 30 pounds to 242 from his weight in January. He opened eyes in practices open to media in May and June, which got the attention of his teammates. But when someone paid him a compliment on the last day of organized workouts, he had a matter-of-fact reply. Williams, more than anyone, knows he's done nothing yet.

If he can do it, good for him... But why he couldn't do it before really makes me wonder if he freaking cares about the sport at all.

Maybe he's finally being humble. Hope it works out for him.

July 7, 2008  07:58 AM ET

Turning heads...from side to side in disgust...

July 7, 2008  08:12 AM ET

I don't care how much weight he loses, the guy is and will always be a loser.

July 7, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Do it in the games, then I will be impressed. If he is catching important passes in week 8 then I will start paying attention. Until then, keep your mouth shut, keep a low profile and put in mad work.

July 7, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Hope he turns it around, good luck to him.

Nothing faster than a 270 pound reciever. He's just like everyother reciever that came from his college...lazy and just happy to get a huge payday. The only thing that is motivating him right now is that next contract, and then six months later he'll be cut again.

July 7, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I'm rooting for him. Good luck, Mike.

It's real damn easy to not give a crap anymore after you get paid big rookie "GUARANTEED MONEY" Someday the owners will actually realize this too.

July 7, 2008  10:59 AM ET

This may actually work for the Titans. A lot of athletes need to be humbled like this.

July 7, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Remember the amazing one-handed catch he made at USC? Seems like a hundred years ago doesn't it? Here's hoping Williams gets it going again.

July 7, 2008  11:26 AM ET

If he can turn it around more power to him, VY does need a big target to throw to and apparently Roy WAS a big target. Good luck to him.

July 7, 2008  11:27 AM ET

He has been humbled...that's what happens when you are great in college against boys (see reggie bush) and then you play with men in the NFL
