Yes, the Cavs want Corey Maggette, the Clippers shooting guard who walked away from a $7 million option. Like Boston, San Antonio and some other teams, the Cavs are offering Maggette a "full level exception" which starts at $5.8 million. The same is true of the other contenders.

Don't the Clips themselves still have the same mid-level exception EVEN if they re-signed Brand???

July 7, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Is this supposed to be an April Fools joke or something? Its July! Unless Cleveland throws Arenas money at him he shouldn't even think about it..

July 7, 2008  11:08 AM ET

LeBron needs more help than Maggette.

"Don't the Clips themselves still have the same mid-level exception EVEN if they re-signed Brand???"

I believe so-
but he would never 'accept' a low-ball offer from the team he has already been on

I think Magette would be a waste on the Cavs-
they need an outside SHOOTER.
Magette is not that

heat should not resign davis and bring in maggette he is a better scorer and better defender

so are 28 other NBA teams.

Go away heat fan

I don't think this is the big time help Lebron was looking for. The Cavs already have a large group of underachieving and useless players. I'm counting down the days till Lebron signs with the Nets.

Oh boy, please GIVE IT UP Bertchboy....lol

'coz IF he's willing to play for 5.8m/year, clips can sign him for that money for multiple years, and along with Brand (IF?) Davis and Kaman, they can become a threat in the West. Also that injured PG Livingston can be a surprise package IF he stays healthy...I know, LOTS of IFs, but Hey this is the T&R

July 7, 2008  02:39 PM ET

It's likely the Clippers gave up their midlevel exception this year because that clears an extra 5.8 million off their cap, which would help them get enough cap space to split between Brand and Davis.

Yes, if you're under the cap, the exceptions count against your cap number.

July 7, 2008  02:53 PM ET

The only advantage Cleveland would have over Boston and San Antonio is that he may get more playing time there and could become a bigger star playing second fiddle to LeBron rather than thrid or fourth fidle on those other teams.

July 7, 2008  03:14 PM ET

If the Suns and Maggette were smart, they'd work something out. Maggette would fit well here and would improve the defense with his athleticism. However, now that LA has signed Baron Davis, I don't see a swap of Barbosa and another for Maggette. Bummer.

July 7, 2008  03:45 PM ET

what did I say in another post? This guy is confusing the hell out of a lot of people.
Make up your mind, darn it! It's not like other teams are offering him $20 mil more than your current!

"Long-time family friends, mom's high-school classmate, under awe, honored......" it just shows that almost everybody in LA can give you a lot of drama in the NBA. I don't know about you guys but I just am not one for this much drama about nothing!
Just go sign with the Spurs already!

July 7, 2008  04:07 PM ET

Come to Boston, just so i can see how Doc Rivers handles the minutes and strategy lol

July 7, 2008  04:31 PM ET

Having been a Clipper Season Ticket holder for three years I can say this about Corey. He has been a real good addition to this team, the most consistent player we had all of last year. Although there have been questions about his defense, I thought he also improved that last year as well. I hate to lose him, but I would rather he end up in the East rather than help anyone in the West. He also seems to play better when he is a starter, than coming in off the bench, so it would be better for him to go somewhere he can start. Boston hmmmm....Cavs maybe a better choice for him.....out

heat fan changed his name again. wat a ****

July 7, 2008  04:51 PM ET

The Cavs need much more than Maggette plus they have been down this road before with Larry Hughes. They do not need to bring in another player that has something close to LeBron's skills-set. They need shooters and a true point guard. Maggette is neither.

July 7, 2008  06:01 PM ET

Folks I just heard the Maggette-to-Boston discussion on ESPN's PTI. So there maybe something more to it, than just rumors

July 7, 2008  08:02 PM ET

Just cz it comes out on ESPN.. doesnt mean its going down.

Maggette might be a better fit in Boston than most people realize.. Sure he could come off the bench for Ray Allen but Rays getting old and will need Maggettes younger, fresher legs off the bench for some instant offense.. especially noting Boston's occasional droughts. He would get some quality minutes sub-ing for Ray and Pierce who need to rest their legs more. He can even come in for Rondo at times and push Ray at the point cz hes a good enough handler to take care of pg duties.. PG Allen, SG Maggette, SF Pierce, PF Garnett, C Perkins.. thats a VERY scary lineup right there

I hate to say all this considering im a huge lakers fan.. but its true
