With Sabathia gone, Cubs look to Harden

The Cubs' pipe dream was ace left-hander C.C. Sabathia, but he's headed from the Cleveland Indians to the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal that is expected to become official today. The Cubs have spent a lot of time on the phone recently with Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane trying to pry away right-hander Rich Harden. Expect the phone lines to start burning a little hotter beginning today. Waiting for Harden could last right up to the July 31.

Cubs would have to give up basically everything. Like literally, EVERYTHING.

Now HERE is a guy the Phillies could use, except the A's will demand a lot in return. Pat Burrell anyone? He's got an expiring contract.... oh, who am I kidding?

July 7, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Considering the A's used to be in Philadelphia, perhaps a home town discount for the Phils....oh, who am I kidding?

July 7, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Cubs are already a beastly team, they dont need harden and i dont think they have the prospects to give up for harden. Harden should go to a team like the Phillies or the Yankees.

Yes, it's the time of year, when we get to witness the unique genuise of Billy Beane and his MONEYBALL approach, or as I like to call it, a day late and a dollar short so trade 'em.

A's always want alot.

The Phillies will trade for Randy Wolf.

Brewers??? I am sure it was the money not a real thought of a ring.

Cubs will be fine and do not need to sacrifice much... they have a solid team..they could use a little help but not at a cost of messing with the chemistry they have now.

His twin brother Geoff Jenkins is already on the roster...makes sense. Or they'll resign Freddie Garcia, and pull Andy Ashby out of retirement for a 3rd go around. Terry Mulholland anyone?

July 7, 2008  12:17 PM ET

drj, he got traded, he didn't get a new contract...so how was it for the money again? If I'm the Cubbies I'd offer up a firesale for Timmy Lincecum. Piniella wants a lefty, he'd be the one to go after. The Giants would have to look at a package of prospects considering the ridiculous amount of holes in their lineup.

July 7, 2008  12:18 PM ET

I wish I was a colored fella, then I could whine and threaten to sue cuz no one is giving me a call.

July 7, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Beware of getting pitchers from the A's. I'm just saying for every Harren there's two Zitos and Mulders.

Mulholland did pitch a no-hitter for the Phils, one more than anyone else on this staff. Gotta love those glory days of the mid-to-late '90s. Speaking of which, Pat Gillick just got a call from Wayne Gomes. He's also interested in a comeback.

July 7, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Its a cryin' **** shame that a veteran can't get another chance, meanwhile all these other potlicker's are getting signed left and right!

July 7, 2008  12:29 PM ET

Another "potential" trade for the Cubs. Here we go again.

July 7, 2008  12:30 PM ET

marc- did he wave a no trade clause? I am sure they talked long term..was it a trade he had to approve?

July 7, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Think if I put some shoe polish on I'd get a little more attention?

July 7, 2008  12:34 PM ET

I guess having their record and season does show a decent team but clearly they do need help for a real run at the championship... the National league has several contenders this year. It will be interesting in the stretch to see who steps up.. American has 3-4 dominant teams but National is wide open with a few strong teams but anything can happen in the stretch and playoffs.
