C.C. Sabathia, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner and arguably the best pitcher available on the midseason trade market, became a Brewer on Monday when the teams formally agreed to a swap that sent four prospects to Cleveland. To bolster their starting rotation for a playoff run, the Brewers were forced to part with top prospect Matt LaPorta, an outfielder, plus Triple-A left-hander Zach Jackson, Class A right-hander Rob Bryson and a player to be named later. According to some reports, that player will be 2007 Brewers Minor League Player of the Year Taylor Green, a third baseman.

wow brew crew got a steal

July 7, 2008  02:22 PM ET

They paid that for a half a seson, i think it was a fair price.

July 7, 2008  02:25 PM ET

they get 2 draft picks if they dont resign him as well to make up for some of those prospects

July 7, 2008  02:36 PM ET

I think the Indians could have gotten more. I'm shocked the Cubs didn't offer up more, such as Murton, Hill and Marshall or Gallagher. I figure the Indians asked for Marmol, but the Cubs might could have sent them Howry.

If I were the Cubs, I'd worry. The Brew Crew's bats are starting to boom, and they just added the AL's reigning Cy Young winner.

July 7, 2008  02:43 PM ET

Somebody really does need to call the police. The Brewers just committed robbery getting him for four prospects. For them to get LaPorta is good but they should have gotten more.

July 7, 2008  02:44 PM ET

What a STEAL for the Brewers, look out Cubbies

July 7, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Being an Indians fan I'm going to keep a positive attitude about this even though someone who pitches and is still in single A ball doesn't really count as a "prospect" in my book. I mean come on...single A? The other guys may help, don't really know them too well and the fact no one can definitely say the "player to be named later" will be Taylor Green doesn't give me a warm fuzzy either. HOWEVER! If CC does become a FA at seasons end and the Brewers experience of playing in another league as well as a different organization doesn't agree too well with CC there could be a chance he comes back to Cleveland. So Brewers, enjoy him while you have him and give him run support, he'll get you wins. But I'm still hoping and praying that by spring training next year he's back in an Indians uniform. Probably wishful thinking but sometimes positive thinking really works. Hasn't for me yet, maybe this will be the first time it does.

I think the Cubs will be needing a closer...Can't believe Kerry Woods made the All-star team! I honestly think the Brewers got ripped off. A lot of good prospects for a chance at the playoffs? Why didn't they give half that and see if they could have gotten someone else. Sabathia isn't having the greatest year and the prospects are pretty good. Good trade for the Indians!!

July 7, 2008  02:51 PM ET

Not having to include Gamel, Jeffress, Escobar, Salome in the deal or Hardy was a coup for the Brewers. Sure Laporta's a stud but even if he was ready for '09 the Brewers had no place to put him. Losing Green hurts a little but he's still 2-3yrs. down the road from making any sort of real impact. The other two pitchers are just toss-ins. It's refreshing to see for once that it's not just the Cubs, Yanks, and Red Sox who have the resources and the money to go out and acquire talent before the trading deadline. I never thought I'd see the day that one small market team would trade an all-star player to another small market team. That just doesn't happen. Indians fans may feel the got the short end of the stick but if Laporta comes through as advertised they'll have a "40hr. 100+RBI" man patrolling right field for years to come. With the season lost I wouldn't be suprised to see Laporta called up to the club before September.

??????....was leading the AL in Strikeouts, 2nd in innings pitched, 2nd in completed games, tied for 1st in shutouts, tied for 2nd in games started...yea, what an awful season, imagine what he would be doing if Hafner and Martinez weren't hurt....great post there timewalker.

July 7, 2008  02:56 PM ET

Tribe, pay no mind to dummies. Its hard for me to understand how anyone could actually believe that they know baseball with comments like Timewalker. After the first 2 starts of the season, CC's ERA is just over 2 and he doesnt have 11 wins now because of lack of run support.

"Sabathia isn't having the greatest year... " - timewalker

---------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------

"Sabathia is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 18 starts this season, a deceiving record marred by a slow start and his team's inability to support him with runs (Cleveland has scored two or fewer runs in nine of his outings). In five starts in June, he was 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA, with 44 strikeouts and only seven walks in 38 innings." - jsonline.com

Wow , at this point in the season the brewers are usually sellers...didnt think in my lifetime that I would see them make a big move this late in the season....

July 7, 2008  03:06 PM ET

This trade still makes me want to vomit because I hate to think that it's a week before the allstar game and my team has called it quits!? Carmona is scheduled to come back, as is Hafner. No one is playing consistent in the AL Central so they aren't completely done but apparently to our front office we are. I have MLB.TV.com just to watch all the Indians games down here in NC. I guess if my team has given up for this year I can cancel that subscription. If my team's front office has just decided to can this season and look to next season this early I might as well quit watching them struggle...especially with basically only one pitcher now...Cliff Lee...boy do I feel sorry for him.

July 7, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Tribe13, you're right. The Central is winnable. A great 10-day stretch and you're right in the thick of it. With Sabathia and Carmona, that was quite possible. With only half of the big 2 there, it ain't gonna happen.

This type of stuff drives me nuts whenever I see it.

Carmona was definitely going to help. I mean damn with Laffey, Sowers and Byrd trying to see who can give up more HR's by seasons end between the 3 of them anything would be better. Then once our starters (Real starters like CC and Lee) left we have to rely on Bettencourt, Perez and Borowski!? Are you kidding me...Oh, I know, this will fix the problem, lets get rid of the reigning Cy Yound award winner for 4 prospects, only one of which is just one step from the show. The other MAY make it to the bigs at least 2 years from now and actually be ready to be there. Yea, that makes sense. Reminds me of the Indians of the 70's. Trade everything of value before it's too late. I mean there is a reason that the movie Major League was fashioned with the Indians as the team, because that is actually how they used to be...anyone worth value...gone by seasons end. Looks like we may be going back to the Indians of old.

Just to make sure, you mean teams calling it quits early and not my comment right?

Dont be such a self centered yutz. Its not all about you.
