Yankees scouting Zambrano

Scott Kazmir is pitching at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night. Can Victor Zambrano be far behind? In their never-ending quest to find starting pitching, the Yankees plan to send a scout to watch the free-agent righty throw sometime this week, according to a source. Zambrano is infamous for being the pitcher the Mets got when they shipped highly touted prospect Kazmir to Tampa at the trading deadline in 2004. Zambrano, who went 10-14 over three seasons with the Mets, pitched for Toronto and Baltimore last season, but hasn't pitched in the majors this year. After being designated for assignment by Colorado at the end of spring training, Zambrano went 0-6 with a 9.45 ERA for the Rockies' Triple-A club.

yea that sounds like a promising move!! Why arent they looking at Chacon or trading for Bedard maybe, those are at least options with a pulse.

Who do they think they are with all the dumpster diving for pitchers, the Cardinals? You need a Duncan for that to have any success whatsoever.

July 8, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Even with Duncan it's still a very hit and miss proposition. I'd much rather see what Duncan could do with 3 or 4 front line pitchers.

Great, another guy that'll throw 110 pitches by the 5th inning, strike out 5, walk 5 and bore us to death for 2 1/2 hours only to leave us to watch 3 more picthers for another 2 hours.

0-6 with a 9 era in the minors!? Why are they wasting air fare going to see this stiff?
Although, it would be fun to have him around, just to p!ss off the Mets fans.

Obviously, the indians are sellers at this point of the season, why not try to pry Cliff Lee loose. If you can get Sabathia for some prospects, maybe you could get him cheaper

July 8, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Cleveland has a chance to keep Lee. They had no chance to keep Sabathia.

"Zambrano went 0-6 with a 9.45 ERA for the Rockies' Triple-A club."

Perhaps the Yankees should just send Joba out as a lefty every 5th day - or simply bring up someone from Scranton with a 6.00 ERA. Maybe Willie Randolph can give Girardi 5 dismal innings per week. Or bring Doc Gooden back.

Yankees are doing the right thing to keep their struggles in-house. Until the known PD-challenged personalities are off the roster, I cant even root for them - they dont deserve the post-season. May as well use this limbo to develop talent.

not with a 10 foot pole would I touch this clown

July 8, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Why would they waste their time looking at this piece of garbage. Just keep pitching Rasner or Geise if this has been (actually he is more like a never was) is all you can get.

Your depth of baseball knowledge never ceases to amaze me. Lee just signed a long term contract last season. He's not going anywhere. That was 90% of why Sabathia was traded, because this was a walk year.

July 8, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Wow. Yankees fans, your season is close to being declared officially in the toilet if you're considering signing guys like this and Ponson.

July 8, 2008  10:24 AM ET

I'm sure the Mets want to see Zambrano pitching in NY for the Yankees.....just another reminder of the Kazmir deal....

uggg

This would be the type of move CRASHMAN makes. With his track record of dealing with pitchers, Zambrano would be a perfect fit. Crashman if you sign this guy Hank should fire you on the spot. It's a disgrace the team with a 200 million dollar payroll signing pitchers that can't get people out in the minor leagues. This Yankee team is by far the worst in the past 15 years, filled with overrated, under performing players.

Cash will be looking for FA pitching again in the off season. they should be sticking to the same formula they seem to be using to draft pitchers, power arms and if the guy is a little raw they believe they can work with that. Clearly they want someone a bit more polished if they are paying FA bucks, but damaged, or perceived damaged goods will cost, or should cost less.

Zambrano? How pathetic. The Yankees are really have to be really desperate. But they do have a ray of hope. Not too many teams will be running after Carl Pavano when his contract expires at the end of this year. He's all yours, Hank! You'll be well stacked for 2009. I'm sure your buddies in the front office will know where to put him: on the DL, again.

July 8, 2008  11:00 AM ET

People are funny, desperate...pathetic...the only thing desperate and pathetic are the people trying to say the Yankees are dead for the last...well forever really.
Uh huh, the Yankees are going to sign Pavano again, that makes sense, uh huh. Zambrano was reveared not too long ago, do you really think he has lost all of his abilities. If his arm can still throw 93+ someone can get some use out of him.

Sounds like a "Yankees" type of pitcher !!!
