Todd Bertuzzi's newest NHL destination point is Calgary, where the hulking winger has signed a $1.95-million, one-year contract with the Flames. Calgary general manager Darryl Sutter announced the signing today saying,"Todd is a proven scorer with the ability to play both wings. He expressed to us that he wanted to play in Canada and that desire along with signing him to a one year deal was important to our philosophy."

Then you feel the wrath of his finishing move.

250 lbs of lard "big splashed" on top of you.

July 8, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Lard covered twins. A strangely compelling thought .....

July 8, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Probably is like all players......just wanted to play for Mike Keenan.

July 8, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Let me see now! He was a bust in Flori-duh. Detroit cut him lose! Anaheim buys him out because he's a bust! He scored a total of 14 goals and 40 points per season over the last two years playing on stacked teams. But the Flames think he'll be their 30+ goal man?

Hmmm! If playing with Zeterberg and Datsiuk in Detroit, and Perry and Getzlaf in Anaheim didn't re-energize his scoring touch, how do they figure he will suddenly become a 30+ goal scoring machine playing with a bunch of muckers and plumbers in Calgary? Good luck, Cowtown!

July 8, 2008  11:14 AM ET

So then the answer to the question is in fact...BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WOULD!!!

Only Keenan

July 8, 2008  11:27 AM ET

I don't know about this deal! Calgary gets rid of all their skaters and scorers and loads up on muckers! They basically traded Nolan for one of Brian Burke's masterpieces here! Looks to me like Iron Mike is muscleing in on Sutter's domain as GM in Calgary! His finger prints are all over this one. This will definitely be a "Mike Keenan" type of team!

July 8, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Keenan. Another Rogaine candidate that's despised.
Sharper minds know the details, but he dissed Yzerman big time
by leaving him off a team of elite players; but I forgot the venue.
Nahmey, help me out here.
Uh, when was that, and what game was...um, ...Oh, nevermind.

July 8, 2008  12:51 PM ET

Most likley they were the only club that expressed interest. His early asking price was 4 million. I wonder who won in the negotiations?
bostongm | 07/08/08, 11:04 AM

I was thinking the same thing... to go from 4Mill. last year to less than 2 Mill for one year, you could say his stock has severly dropped (as it should). And why would the Flames bother? For the record, Calgary misses the playoffs next year.

July 8, 2008  01:19 PM ET

this story has nothing to do with why, it just says he wanted too

July 8, 2008  01:24 PM ET

I'd love to have my "stock drop" to the point where I was worth "only" $1,95 million a year.

In a nutshell, that is what is majorly wrong with the NHL and pro sports in general.

John Q. Public, the fool who pays to watch these guys gets the heave ho and is on UIC or standing in a bread line.

These guys run their course and "settle" for $2 million a year.

Things are so frelled up (Farscape reference) it is beyond belief.

July 8, 2008  03:16 PM ET

i hate having this guy in our division, he always ends up coming back.

so get rid of tanguay, and sign bertuzzi? they should have gave alex more time, he can score if they want to put points up. I think teams in our conference are starting to move towards aggressive type players, instead of finesse? In other words, a more Eastern Conference style.

July 8, 2008  05:00 PM ET

Tanguay isn't a Keenan kind of guy.....

July 8, 2008  07:33 PM ET

$ 1.95 million is still too much for this guy.
I'd only have givin him a $1 million flat with bonuses and the potential to earn another $1 million if he moves his **** and plays like an nhl'er but I probably wouldn't have bothered with him in the first place.

July 8, 2008  11:15 PM ET

"Todd is a proven scorer with the ability to play both wings"
But he didn't have the ability to play FOR the Wings

July 9, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Detroit got him to push people over and then score in the aftermath. Instead he was just a space eater...GET OUT OF HANK'S WAY!!! Detroit knew they had to get tougher, but, as shown this year, you don't have to be big to be tough.

July 9, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Thing about Bertuzzi is he's not really that tough. He's a big lummox for sure but not mean or ornery. If he gets a guy against the boards like he did to Chelios a few years back he can squash the ife out of them. Or his big bomb move on an unconcious Steve Moore (which to me was his only instance ever of goonery), driving his 250 lbs of goo through Moore into the ice below.

But he does not play big. Avery plays big and isn't. Put Avery's mind set in Bertuzzi's body and you'd have something.
