Did Griffin deserve decision?

When Saturday night's Quinton Jackson-Forrest Griffin match ended, there were two big unanswered questions: Who is going to get the decision? Was this the fight of the year? Considering it was a match for what has been for the last decade and is still today the sport's marquee belt, the UFC light heavyweight title, it was guaranteed, no matter what the decision, the controversy would shortly take center stage ahead of what the match itself delivered. What made the fight even more controversial is that Griffin clearly delivered more offense, and just as clearly, Jackson's punches, when they connected, hurt Griffin worse. Griffin's face was a mess, as he joked after the fight he lost track of the number of stitches needed, and said, "Every punch hurt." Jackson's left leg was in bad shape by the end of the first round. Griffin had superior footwork and cage generalship, but whenever they traded, Jackson more often that not came out the better. In scoring from ringside, I had the fight 47-47 at the moment the fight ended. That was based on giving Jackson round five, which I thought was close to an even round. If 10-10 scores weren't frowned upon by the athletic commissions, to me, that's what the round should have been, and with that score, it's Griffin's fight 48-47. When announcer Bruce Buffer declared a unanimous decision and read the scores, before saying who won, I was certain it would be Griffin. When Griffin was announced as the winner, I made sure to look at the crowd for the reaction. Eighty to 85 percent people at Mandalay Bay standing and cheering, with a large percentage practically dancing and celebrating the title change.

I swear I have flushed things without peanuts in it that looked tougher than that guy. Is he holding his happy meal toy in that picture?

Nice job UFC, now Chuck should be able to come right back in and get his belt back. All about marketing...

I clearly thought that forest was the aggressor ...It seemed to me that rampage only landed that big uppercut that staggered forest.I like forrest, but Im also a rampage fan...well see this matchup again , Im sure

July 8, 2008  11:36 AM ET

well I clearly thought that rampage was in control...he brought the fight to griffin...im not a fan of running...I can watch boxing for that..but this is not boxing...this is supposed to be real fighting....how do you score a fight where one guy almost gets knocked out and the other almost gets choked out??...definitely not a unanimous decision...sounds like boxing all over again...now chuck liddell can recapture the title...after all he is the star of the devision....

Lions, so you are saying the UFC rigged it so that Forrest would win because he is the better fighter to market? Are you kidding me? I love Forrest, but Rampage has a much bigger personality than Forrest. If Rampage had won, then people would be saying the UFC rigged it in his favor. Go check out Sherdog and see how most fighters ranked the fight. Most pro fighters thought Forrest won the fight, and so do I. I think Rampage had the harder punches, but Forrest had more of them and controlled where the fight was. He executed the gameplan that he wanted to. The fight was a close on and I would be more than happy to see a rematch, but I think the decision was the right one.

U never let the fight go to the judges! Anything can happen Danna has sead it him self a million times. U NEVER know how they c the fight. And I think Rampage sead "u can garotee that our fight wouln't go 2 the judges!"

Choke, I was thinking the same thing when they showed that part of TUF before the fight. Jackson's trainer should have never told him he was winning the fight going into round #5 either. You always tell your fighter he is losing the fight and light a fire under him. That fight wa too clode for either corner to tell their fighter they were ahead. Both corners should have been telling thier fighter they had to win round 5.

That decision was a sham (made me sick). He did not do enough to win the title. I can't wait until Forrest gets beat down in his first "title defense'.

WORK!!!

no.

The first round should of been scored 10-8 in favor of Rampage! The next three rounds to Forrest 10-9 each round. The fifth round was very close but Rampage was the aggressor 10-9. Which means that the fight should of been a draw. Rampage retaining his belt!

Any one who knows anything about this sport, knows that this fight could have gone either way...when left up to the judges, more than likely will go to the aggressor. The judges for these events are state "boxing" judges, which means it is virtually impossible for the UFC to have a say in who wins. Please quit with the ridiculous talk of conspiracy.

You could also say that round 2 went to Forrest 10-8 in which case he still wins by a point.

While I don't think the fight was fixed are you telling me that you don't think that state boxing judges can be bought?

Hank, it's Blue Steel. ;)

Definitely wondering if this guy saw the fight.
If he feels sick, it's cause his guy lost. Not because of any obvious unfair judging.
I'm not a Griffin fan whatsoever, but clearly he was the overall aggressor and he won the fight. Not a huge margin of victory...but so what, he won. Everyone predicted Jaskson would knock Griffin out. It didn't happen. I think these articles about 'controversy' are a media invention. If there is anything shady going on, it's simply that the words 'controversial decision' help sell tickets for rematches.

July 9, 2008  01:54 AM ET

I couldnt agree with you more Yoda... Rampage fans are all screaming conspiracy and media driven outcomes... please. sometimes your guy doesnt win, as a fan of the sport you should be able to appreciate what Griffin was able to accomplish, no matter how close the margin of victory was. And close fights always go to the competitor who is controlling the pace and aggression of the fight, clearly Griffin. And for the record, round 2 was 10-8 in favor of Griffin without a doubt.

Jason:

If I am wrong them when/if CHuck beats Evans then he won't get a title fight against Forrest right? UFC loves Chuck, Chuck puts butts in the seats like no other fighter ever has. He can't beat Rampage, so now he get's to fight Griffin. You don't think Chuck was smiling when the winner was declared. I bet Dana called Chuck the same night and told him he better win in September so he can set the fight up already.

All of that aside, it would be nice if to be the champ you had to beat the champ. Yeah Griffin won the fight, but he sure as hell didn't beat anyone. Boxing isn't dead, it's just called MMA.

Lions, who says Chuck can beat Forrest either? Regardless of whether the UFC loves chuck or not Dana White is not stupid enough to try to fix fights. He has worked far to hard to legitimize the UFC and MMA in general to do anything so stupid. To be honest, the UFC markets whoever the champ is. Jackson put butts in the seats too. The bottom line is the UFC has a great core fan base and they are going to watch regardless of who is champ. Even if Chuck does beat Forrest don't you think Jackson would be around for another shot at chuck. Which fight do you think is bigger Forrest/Chuck or Chuck/Jackson? The UFC would have made much more off a Chuck/Jackson 2 than a Chuck/Forrest fight. Conspiracy theorist will always come up with a reason why person A beat person B. If Jackson had won there would be people saying it was fixed and the UFC wanted Jackson to win to setup the rematch with Chuck.

Jackson lost the fight. Accept it and move on.
