Red Sox interested in Teixeira

The Red Sox are among many clubs closely monitoring Mark Teixeira, who is approaching free agency and could be dealt this month unless Atlanta's fortunes take a dramatic turn for the better. The Sox' interest in the switch-hitting first baseman indicates some concern about the health of designated hitter David Ortiz, who has not played since the end of May because of a wrist injury.

it's already been said, Papi is now taking BP. Texeira is a good player but is not needed here. I'm sure if something fancies their interest, regardless of the papi come back, it might happen.

If the yankees want him, you can be sure the red sox might up the ante.

and what team would not want him for the playoffs?

July 8, 2008  07:20 AM ET

hey how about that those Red Sox are trying to buy another championship. Wow

July 8, 2008  07:24 AM ET

I think it's a smokescreen -- I predict that Tex ends up in pinstripes -- and the red sox are acting interested, but really just trying to force the yanks to give up more talent to get him....

July 8, 2008  07:26 AM ET

If this road trip goes like all the others this season (BADLY), I can certainly see the Braves trying to trade him. I'd hate to see him go, but that's the reality of it.....besides, I don't think ATL will offer him the money he's looking for in free agency.

Unless the Sox plan on dumping some core players like Manny and either Lowell or Youk, he doesn't fit. Manny walks, but Lowell is under a contract most teams wouldn't touch. His home away splits are among the worst. Does this mean Youk would be dealt to make room?

July 8, 2008  07:51 AM ET

A switch hitting, slick fielding, young player with some power. Why would they want him?

July 8, 2008  08:10 AM ET

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ATLANTA!!!!???? : (

July 8, 2008  08:15 AM ET

He is an upgrade from Youkilis. Teixeira is leaving Atlanta. Will Atlanta and Boston trade first basemen? Does NY have the same kind of value to offer in return?

I can see Theo offloading two huge pains (Manny and Curt) and one small but growing pain.

July 8, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Masterson will be a reliever and so will help the bullpen, which on the middle relief and setup side, can't keep guys off the bases...

I do not want to trade for Texeira if we have to give up too much....

CardsFan,

An upgrade from Youkilis? Please explain....

Youkilis .308 13 53 plus Gold Glove
Texeira .276 16 66

How so?

July 8, 2008  08:48 AM ET

An upgrade from Youkilis? In what way is that? Defense? no. Offense? Power, maybe, but batting average, clutch hitting and working the count? No way. Youk is a cornerstone of the Boston franchise and should spend his entire career in Boston. Texeira's best days are behind him... the had inflated stats because of a power friendly ball park in Texas... he's nothing in that home run graveyard in Atlanta.

July 8, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Last Player we had up from the Atlanta Minor League Braves was RentaWreck...

how'd that work out?

July 8, 2008  08:50 AM ET

Grunt,

I agree, plus you have the argument that Youkilis is doing the job against the toughest competition in baseball in the AL East, versus a maybe player from the National League...who is a star in Atlanta...who wouldn't be?

July 8, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Justin,

Unless he's a Shortstop, where would the Red Sox play him?

July 8, 2008  08:53 AM ET

BobBoston: you might recall that Texiera was in the AL until the trade deadline last year.... he did pretty well..... Texiera is a Boras client, which means he won't be a Brave next year and there are only a small number of teams with the $$$$s to sign him.....

July 8, 2008  08:53 AM ET

A Gold Glove award winning fielder, Youkilis currently holds the sport's all-time record for most consecutive errorless games at first base.

July 8, 2008  08:55 AM ET

The only thing here is that the Braves are going to clear a lot of salary space with Hampton, anr probably Smoltz and Glavine departing. I hold out a slight hope that they'll retain him.

Hi Sir,

Thanks , almost forget about him beign in the AL, but where would they play him?
