Ronaldo may miss EPL opener

With the Man U-Real Madrid tug-of-war for his services still going on, Ronaldo has undergone right ankle surgery in the Netherlands and he may not be back in time for the start of the EPL (or La Liga) season. Ramon Calderon continues to spend more time talking about Ronaldo than actual players on his current team, telling media on Sunday that he thinks Ronaldo will stay at Man U, but pointing out that there is still time for a deal to be made. All I know is that I wish I could be in the same room the next time Alex Ferguson and Calderon cross paths because it could be fun to watch.

this article is talking about two different Ronaldos...one plays for Man U and is arguably the best player int he world. the other plays for AC Milan and at one point was arguably the best player in the world. get your facts straight as there are two idiot

R's Dog is right - that's not the Ronaldo in question.

Calderon, to the issue at hand, did this to himself. He promised certain stars (C. ronaldo and KaKa - specifically) in order to get elected club president and now he isn't making it happen. I doubt he even really cares if C.Ronaldo comes to Madrid or not; just so long as he can say he made every effort.

ManU management can spare me their faux outrage as well; 85M is a nice chunk of change no matter who the target is, period. As UEFA President Michel Platini hinted at himself, yes, this is not a pleasant part of futbol but this is a game every big club plays and ManU certainly are playing it just as sleazily as Calderon by asking 100M for one player.

In the end, Calderon started this whole mess, he should bear the brunt of the blame - no matter what.

Well technically both Ronaldos will miss the beginning of the season.

I knew Calderon was just talking up all these huge transfers simply to get elected just as anyone else running for the Real presidency would do. I knew they would not all come, if any. That wasn't important for me. I had watched Real play as a bunch of individuals during the Galactico years and I was hoping Calderon would be more interested in building a TEAM, which he seems to have done for the most part. To see now that he is willing to risk so much money and team chemistry for one player is unnerving for me.

Burgundy: I hope you're right that Calderon just wants to be able to SAY he did everything he could to land the world's best player.

Yea but I don't think that even Wigan would want fat Ronaldo at this point.

SI needs to drop this while football charade. They obviously know nothing about the sport and prove it once again. Do they have editors or can monkeys just throw stuff up on the website.

MA:

This is the way I see it.

Calderon's promises will be forgotten if he can compete well in, and even win, some of the three levels; Liga, CL, and Copa del Rey. For some reason, and in the end I think it's the $$$$$, everyone is riding Real for their CL play instead of focusing on the back-to-back league wins. My guess is that this presing need to win big in the CL is what is causing the push for big stars; the idea being that big stars win big games and no games these days are bigger than the CL.

In terms of the players, no one, and surely not me, doubts that Raul is a quality player. There is a reason he gets to wear the '7' but, he isn't as fast as he once was and without his former sickening speed (with or without the ball) defenders can clamp-down on him. Same goes for Ruud - both he and '7' are good inside the box and facing the goal but right now, the money strikers are big and fast.

Madrid doesn't have that. I don't think they need it but then again, I'm not on their payroll, either. I think they are doing just fine like they are right now; controlled attacking from midfield, Guti's lethal passing, and the ever present threat of quick-counters from just about anyone except Iker himself. What Calderon wanted was C. Ronaldo's sick combination of flat-out speed, power, and ball control. Just the threat of having C. Ronaldo on the field would make Real a force to be reckoned with and it would give C. Ronaldo the relief from hacing to be "the" player. Imagine what it would be like for CR to be able to dish to Ruud or to '7' or to have the ability to collaborate daily with Sjneider, Robben, Higuain and Guti.

Higuain, for example, is athletic but he doesn't quite have Torres' or C. Ronaldo's break-away speed. Saviola is fast but not too big. Soldado doesn't have the ball control skills. Robinho is quick with the ball but he isn't strong enough to take the ball at midfield and withstand some of the defending tactics that would get thrown at him all the way up the field.

Ultimately, Calderon and Mijatovic have tactical plans in mind when they talk about CR - otherwise don Bernd Schuster would not be so in-favor of the purchase. However, the way in which Calderon approaches the business end of things leaves a lot to be desired - and Mijatovic is even worse.

Sorry for the length.

This one is bad too. Man T&R is slipping today.

lol, they changed the picture XD

Burgundy: I would have been happy with a Flamini or Cesc-type of player. CR7 would be great to have but they don't really NEED him to win the Champions league. They haven't even had the same man coach the team for two years in a row for almost a decade it seems.

Start there. See if Schuster can get it done with what he has and if it doesn't work out again then try to buy CR7, Kaka, or someone on that level. Try to do it through continuity and consistency of quality play first. I also agree with you that to start acting like winning La Liga is not enough now after all the crappy, trophy-less Galactico years is stupid.

July 8, 2008  01:04 PM ET

THe main reason United wont sell Ronaldo is the fact that it will seem like Real are a bigger club then them, stealing their biggest star after winning both the EPL and CL. United are supposed to be the worlds biggest club.

Hopefully he will stay, but it looks like he'll miss the beginning of the season no matter what

July 8, 2008  04:11 PM ET

jeevs BS: same reason why players would prefer to play in LA or NY over Columbus or KC.... Location location location.... England vs Spain....

July 8, 2008  04:30 PM ET

Exactly. Manchester: crummy weather, crummy food, blah league outside of the top 4-6 teams and he's achieved everything there. Madrid: great weather, great food, great league and new adventure. Those are the reasons why as I much as I love United, they will always be at best be tied with Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona, and Juventus. Those teams play in better leagues and are in better cities.

July 8, 2008  04:32 PM ET

That is true, Madrid is a better city, I won't doubt that, but that isn't everything. You cannot compare the situation in MLS to European football due to the history involved.

Better weather, better girls, bigger city, Madrid!

But Manchester United have just as much of a storied history if not bigger and have legendary players pass through the club, and are as popular and make as much profit. The question is do you want to go somewhere that has the best squad in the world or go someplace with a better city but you will be mobbed by paparazzi everytime you step out of the door. That's the reason Anelka chooses the EPL over La Liga

July 8, 2008  04:34 PM ET

But of course, since he lived in Portugal, Madrid would be his "dream" club, while say someone who lived in Ireland or Wales would consider Manchester their dream club, is basically where there from too

Reddogg99:Are you saying La Liga and Serie A are better leageus than the EPL? You must be crazy, we had 3 finalists in the Champions League final, and know we are on top of the Uefa Coeffecient rankings
