Hornets target Celtics' Posey

The Hornets are targeting Boston Celtics free agent James Posey to solve their needs at shooting guard, but whether Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower can pull off a deal is uncertain. Free agents can begin signing contracts Wednesday, and Posey is one of the most sought after on the market. Posey, who can play shooting guard and small forward, appears to be one of the Hornets' No. 1 targets. However, it likely would take a full mid-level exception offer of $5.8 million for him to consider coming to New Orleans.

Boy, he could really help NO take the next step....but I certainly hope he is motivated to return to Boston and try to defend the title.

July 8, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Boston is being cheap.. given how valuable he was to the team they should have taken him off the market by now...

July 8, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Why havent the Celtics locked him up, he had a big move leaving Miami to join the Celtics and then was a key backup to the playoff run and season and now they are letting him look at options.

July 8, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Yup Boston is taking a BIG gamble with this one!! Hey Ainge 4get bout maggette, Darius Miles, and handle your #1 top priority:POSEY!!!!

July 8, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Yup; Aingle is back to his dumbest best. Change a winning formula for the unknown?? Good job. I HOPE they lose Posey to NO, AND NO have a great next season

July 8, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Totally agree........get Posey signed and then worry about everyone else, Danny.

July 8, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Posey is a solid player. If the Celtics decide to go for Maggette then I'm begging Mitch Kupchak to sign Posey. The Lakers need him.

July 8, 2008  11:58 AM ET

the celtics shouldn't get maggette they need posey's amazing defense and his good 3 point shot.

July 8, 2008  01:00 PM ET

Well they don't really need Posey now...they are wanting a combination of Billy Walker and JR Giddens can fill that role. IT is also much cheaper. He was great in the playoffs though.

July 8, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Posey will look good in N.O. Hornets should try to pay him what he wants. He is worth it. They are missing a guy like him. Bonzi wasn't the answer. Posey will shot down players and hit big shots. Those are a given. He will make a difference if he goes to the Hornets.

July 8, 2008  02:15 PM ET

Walker and Giddens can't replace Posey's D........ and his clutch PO experience

July 8, 2008  02:32 PM ET

You are right, but they have the ability to eventually do so and they add youth to the team off the bench

July 8, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Danny Ainge knows what he is doing. He doesn't want to pay Posey the mid level exception until he's 36 years old, which is two years past Garnett's deal. Posey is a complimentary player who wants to cash in on a great Finals. Good for him.

I agree DWITT, but in the short term, Posey is needed for a title defense.

July 8, 2008  02:52 PM ET

The Celtics need to make sure that they sign Posey. He is a key player for them off the bench.

July 8, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Wow the Hornets could be terrifying if they pick up Posey.

REPORT JUST IN

division deals are quite rare but this one is being heavily discussed by both teams and has been for some time!

shawn marion is happy to join the orlando magic and sign an extension as he knows his time is limited in miami and has told associates this is a real possibility

the deal would include a package based around hedo turkoglu with others to make the salarys match (arroyo wants to be a starter and is welcome to a sign and trade)
i can just see things going back and forth i want this pick as well etc,etc

my thoughts on this are anytime a deal like this actually makes to much sense it never seems to happen
it would be a win-win for both teams

July 8, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Posey would be a nice fit with Paul's 'drive and kick out' game, but at what price? You're talking about a guy who's a solid role player off the bench who is going to expect $5-6mil at least. If you ask me I think the Hornets have a more pressing need for a starting shooting guard AND small forward. When Mo' Pete is your starting shooting guard you know you've got bigger issues than worrying about filling out your bench. Peja's too inconsistent as well and has proven to dissapear in big games, plus he's a liability on defense. They would be much better served going after Magette instead in my opinion.

Barca

You just explained why they need to get Posey.
