Colorado star Pablo Mastroeni, 31, said Friday night that he will leave the Rapids after this season to seek a contract from teams in Spain's La Liga or Italy's Serie A. "My mind is made up," Mastroeni said a few minutes after the Rapids' 4-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls. "I'm ready to go. Every soccer player wants a challenge every day."

Keep dreaming buddy.

July 8, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Mastroeni is 31 and it took him this long to figure it out that he wants to play in a big league? He'd better hurry up.

Mid to lower-table teams in Spain and Italy have B-teams full of guys just like Mastroeni so he will have a tough time trying to sign with any club at all.

It's not impossible but it is going to be very hard.

July 8, 2008  10:43 AM ET

I think he could get on one of the teams but who would actually play him enough to make the move worthwhile? I wouldn't play him over there at this age. Sorry Pablo, you ain't good enough for those leagues.

July 8, 2008  10:46 AM ET

he should keep dreamin, jus MAYBE serie b

July 8, 2008  10:57 AM ET

I want to play professional football in Italy too. I've decided.

July 8, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Mastroeni is one of my favorite American soccer players, but he must be delusional. I created an account just to post how ridiculous I think this is. A holding midfielder is going to have to be pretty spectacular for someone to bring one across the Atlantic. His heritage might make it easy for him to get a work permit, which might make him more appealing to prospective teams.

July 8, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Not likely. He may play in Spain or Italy but it will definitely be a lower division team. Maybe he can find a home in Serie B.

July 8, 2008  12:00 PM ET

yeah, maybe he should try different countries with less powerful leagues, Holland? Belgium? How about going Nodic, I'm sure he could play there, but Spain and Italy?! Doubtful

July 8, 2008  12:00 PM ET

yes he's old... but lets not forget the guy is capable of playing... look how well he performed against Argentina.... he's physical def. mid.... he's suited for the style of play in Italy... but i dont see him getting any looks by Serie A teams (unless they are just being promoted, but even that is a stretch)....

Serie B looks like the best fit for the guy... not to mention a good fit for the team as well... here you can probably pick up a seasoned vet for relatively cheap and add depth to your team... not to mention the guy can play.... he is getting up in years so i agree if he has plans to do so he should try soon...

liiitttle late there pablo. though if you make it to italy can you buy me some gelato?

July 8, 2008  12:28 PM ET

The only challenge he will get in La Liga everyday is in training. Adu will get more PT than him and he's on the bench 90% of the time. Delusional is definitely the right word for this one....

July 8, 2008  12:57 PM ET

Even if he makes it, hell be playing at some bad club like atalanta and will be in the reserves. Maybe he just wants to go back to europe to relax and experience the culture through football

July 8, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Wow a soccer player wants to leave the US where no one gives a crap about the sport and play in Europe where everyone lives and dies with each goal... Imagine that

July 8, 2008  01:16 PM ET

Yeah, I shouldn't make fun. I act like I wouldn't take the opportunity to live somewhere like Siena and play halfassed football and get paid a lot of money to do it.

July 8, 2008  01:47 PM ET

He might -- might -- have a shot at making a team in Scotland or England outside of the big 4-6, but then there's the visa thing for a guy that's old and playing in a blah league.

July 8, 2008  02:03 PM ET

He should start bugging Bologna and Lecce in Serie A - they just got promoted. I doubt Chievo would take him, though.

Jeevs, he wouldn't make it at Atalanta. He might have made it for Reggina last year, but even that I doubt.

July 8, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Atalanta, Georgia? They have a team there I dont know about?

July 8, 2008  02:40 PM ET

And at the ripe age of 45 he may REALIZE that he want to come back and play for the MLS. And retired like every other old pelotudo who comes to the MLS to play they last athletic days!
