Regrets for Bobcats' Okafor?

You're probably as surprised as I am that Emeka Okafor turned down that $12 million-plus-per-year offer last summer. The way I hear it, Okafor was so close to accepting it he indicated to at least one teammate he would, just before the deadline for an extension. I hear the Bobcats and Okafor's representatives have had some discussions since free-agency started, but no heavy negotiations. When you're a restricted free agent, coming to an agreement often is a deliberate process.

So... is this really news, from LAST YEAR!!

July 8, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Nope it wasnt a mistake, once he spends a year wit that nut Larry Brown he'll wanna be gone!!!!

July 8, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Oakafur is a good kid-
great work ethic.....
he will LOVE Brown & vice versa.

the problem is he has no NBA offensive talent
He is an undersized PF

He is a good player to have on your team, but he should not be one of your top 3 players.....if so, you are in trouble

July 8, 2008  11:27 AM ET

If MJ is smart, he'll only offer him to a mid-level contract. Okafur is still yet to show he is worth big money. $12 million per year? You've got to be kidding me.

July 8, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Time for Emeka to get some solid advice from Jim Calhoun !!!

July 8, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Emeka Okafor should have taken that extension. He may regret that.

July 8, 2008  11:59 AM ET

jgb that's not true. okafar can be a number 2 option, and he's not undersized he's 6'10.

July 8, 2008  12:02 PM ET

has ne team even offered this guy a contract????

July 8, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Fire the agent Emeka.

July 8, 2008  12:26 PM ET

"jgb that's not true. okafar can be a number 2 option, and he's not undersized he's 6'10."

6'10 ? I think not....but anyway-

He can't score..... his CAREER avg is 14 pts (and thats on an AWFUL team)
if he played on a real team that would go DOWN
- he CAN rebound & give you good minutes & defenese.

But he is NOT a #2 guy

He would be great on the Lakers-
a little toughness, rebounding, no need to shoot

July 8, 2008  01:20 PM ET

not as bad as that reetard sprewell

July 8, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Bad choice. It was his choice and he was the only one that could have changed the outcome. To turn down an offer like that you are saying that you are going to play way better then the previous years.

July 8, 2008  01:40 PM ET

Compare Emeka to a gentle Oakley and tell me what that's worth... certainly nothing over 6mil a year... If he wants to be a star in this league he should strive to be the big man version of Bruce Bowen cos that's what he was built for..

July 8, 2008  02:54 PM ET

12.5 million for Emeka Okafor?? Damn, he shouldn't have passed that up. His value will continue to diminish as long as he stays on the Bobcats.

July 8, 2008  02:54 PM ET

REPORT JUST IN

division deals are quite rare but this one is being heavily discussed by both teams and has been for some time!

shawn marion is happy to join the orlando magic and sign an extension as he knows his time is limited in miami and has told associates this is a real possibility

the deal would include a package based around hedo turkoglu with others to make the salarys match (arroyo wants to be a starter and is welcome to a sign and trade)
i can just see things going back and forth i want this pick as well etc,etc

my thoughts on this are anytime a deal like this actually makes to much sense it never seems to happen
it would be a win-win for both teams

July 8, 2008  03:27 PM ET

Emeka is not a franchise player and 12 million is too much, he should have taken it while he could have.

July 8, 2008  03:54 PM ET

Emeka Okafor is most certainly a franchise player. Unfortunately he's playing out of his natural position and forced to play center. If the briantrust of the Bobcats had any sense at all, they would have drafted a center. Okafor wants a chance to win. That's not going to happen in Charlotte. The money isn't the most important thing to him. He would sign for less money if he could catch on with a winner.

July 8, 2008  04:26 PM ET

yeah he is a franchise player but is kinda weak at center watch him play as power forward last year and you'll see that he was much better

July 8, 2008  05:05 PM ET

hllywd if that is true could you see the 76ers putting in an offer for okafor if they miss out on their other targets?

July 8, 2008  07:52 PM ET

why would he want to stay there with that team? then throw Larry Brown in the mix, ohhh lord it will be interesting that's for sure.
