Suns renew pursuit of Barry

Still looking for a short-term solution to their lack of shooters, the Suns are taking a second shot at coaxing Brent Barry to Phoenix. But much like his most particular prowess - Barry is one of the top 3-point shooters around - the chances of getting him are a long shot. Sources confirmed a San Antonio Express-News report that Barry, who turned down his player option (at the veteran's minimum of $1.262 million) with the Spurs on July 1, has had discussions with the Suns.

ahhh it all makes sense. someone to work with shaq on his free throws, and yet more signs of nepotism from steve kerr. good job kerr... not much longer and you will need to upload your resume to monster or hot jobs

Why does anybody want Brent Barry? He is old and care barely still play. You're lucky if he comes to into a blowout game and hits a shot. Worthless.

No one should be talking to Barry NOW, during the summer
the only way he should be getting a job at this point in his career is if some team that needs a shooter is making a playoff run MIDSEASON.

Otherwise this guy is USELESS

July 9, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Sure, he's close to retirement like most of the other Suns. Kerr has taken a young, exciting athletic team and turned them into a plodding, old group unsure of its identity.

If this is what they mean by "backup point guard", then this is a horrible mistake.

July 9, 2008  10:16 AM ET

I would rather have Steve Kerr come out of retirement and play than sign Brent Barry.

He can play PG but he is more of a wing for us some one who could trail the break and spot up for a quick 3.

did u see him in the conference finals? one game he did have 22 points or somthin but got fouled at the end and didn't get the call

CEL - you need to chill. Yes barry is still a decent player off the bench, and can have nice games now and then. BUT that's your impact player as a Suns organization that is falling apart far far away from being a championship contender?? What are the other things Kerr has in mind for the off-season?? All we've heard is , go after Barry. That's the reason you'r seeing some of the sentiments above.
If he has some master plan, and Barry happens to be just a part of that "puzzle", fine. Doesn't look like it though.
Fact of the matter is, Steve Kerr's lost it. And he knows it.

He can play a solid 20 mins a game. He's very heady, with a strong basketball I.Q., and he can still shoot lights out. Last season he was hurt. The season before that he played 75 games, averaging 21 mins a game, had 8.5 pts a game, while shooting 44.6 from 3. Thing is, he can stretch the floor, and he doesn't make boneheaded mistakes.

July 9, 2008  01:47 PM ET

Barry is NOT what the Suns need. He pulled the management's strings like a puppetmaster after he was released from the Sonics and allowing them to think they had a chance when, not surprisingly, he never had any other intention in mind but to return to the Spurs.

Barry, while a good shooter, is old and not as serviceable as Suns management thinks. He will not be able to play in our uptempo offense nor defend as well as some of the other players vying for the opportunity. "Bones" needs to be lead off to the glue factory...

but he will bring a spark off the bench\

barry is a soild 8th-9th man of the bench who can bring the ball up and shot the lights out. he has experience and he doesnt hesitate to hit/take the big shot. hopefully the suns have another move other than him to make a playoff push
