Hurricanes to trade defenseman
Posted: Wednesday July 09, 2008 07:51AM ET
When Dennis Seidenberg signed a one-year contract Monday, the Hurricanes added another defenseman to their rapidly growing group on the blue line. Now they're looking to go the other direction. Seidenberg's $1.2 million contract -- a hefty raise from the $850,000 he made last season -- puts additional pressure on the Hurricanes to shed salary before training camp opens in September. While they remain well below the NHL's $56.7 million salary cap, they're above the $45 million payroll budget set by owner Peter Karmanos. "We'll still look to move a defenseman," general manager Jim Rutherford said Monday. "I would think in the near future, that would end up happening." The Canes have eight defensemen under contract, not counting minor-leaguers Tim Conboy or Casey Borer, both of whom could end up back in the NHL this season. With most of Carolina's defensemen either recently acquired -- Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen, Josef Melichar -- or signed to new contracts -- Seidenberg, Tim Gleason, Anton Babchuk -- that leaves Frantisek Kaberle and Niclas Wallin as the most likely trade options.

They would only get some average prospects at best

Report Offensive CommentWallin refuses to waive his NTC, which was given to him for some ridiculous reason, but aren't they all? Kaberle is probably the better of the two and I hate to see him go after finally starting to turn it around once Corvo came as he was almost back to the 2005-2006 status. At 2.2 million for this year he is a bargain when you consider what Finger is getting and other players on defense this year. I think the 'Canes only need draft pick(s) or a mid-level prospect. Though there are plenty of defense hungry teams out there, so maybe we can find a suitor to over pay us. I think Wallin should be waived, he's too prone to errors and then he can fly back to Sweden to play as he takes too many costly penalties and his defense was never good.
The only thing I can say about Wallin is that he does have 3 Stanley Cup Playoff OT winners (2 in 2002 and 1 in 06), I don't think Lidstrom has that many, so that's pretty funny.

Report Offensive CommentThis comment will show you my rookie status as a fan, but if the NHL contracted 4 or so teams, would the guys mentioned as trade options above make the cut? I ask this because, unlike baseball and football, where even as a casual fan I know most of the players, these guys are completely anonymous to me. I'm wondering, is that because they're low impact, utility players or I've just been too far out of the loop?

Seeing how you are using the most hated midget's mug for your avatar, you definitely are both of the above! A green, raw rookie and ... out of the loop!
Now, to answer your question (grudgingly, I might add), either those players do not fit into the team's plan and style of play, or the team is trying to free up some money for other needs .... or both. It doesn't necessarily mean they're low impact or utility. I believe both of these players (Kaberle & Wallin) carry fairly big contracts that the 'Canes would like to shed!
Now ...... get rid of the most disgusting midget's mug!

Report Offensive CommentIMO Wallin is a good 2nd/3rd line defensemen when he has his wheels on.
A change of scenery would do Kaberle some good, though he did play well with Joe Corvo toward the end of the year.

Report Offensive CommentMaybe the owner should try and lure in some partners so they can spend more money so Carolina can remain competetive. Unless the owner wants to move the team?

Thanks for the ed.
And the midget's just meant to go with some humor on that Bettman/Lowe thread. Don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player.....OK, back to the bird.
p.s. check out Spiny's blog, he did a nice job.

Hahahah! Now, that's funny! You just ruined my Oilers shirt! You , dirty .....!
There was a time not long ago that the only criters who were able to make a deposit on a new car at the dealerships were our feathered friends! Now things are a changing! With the oil prices as high as they are, a strong loonie and new ownership, things are looking up in the frozen north!
