Racist letter threatened Auerbach
A seemingly nondescript letter arrived at a Manhattan postal facility in 1982, bound for Indiana University basketball coach Bobby Knight. The letter, however, contained the ravings of a racist extortionist, including a death threat targeting Boston Celtics legend Red Auerbach. For 26 years, the anonymous letter's existence remained secret to the public, the stuff of an unsolved mystery stashed in the files of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. No one revealed that a disturbed segregationist scrawled a hateful diatribe in which he wished unspeakable harm upon Auerbach, a civil rights pioneer who drafted the NBA's first African-American (Chuck Cooper in 1950), became the first NBA coach to start five black players in a game (in the 1963-64 season), and appointed the league's first black coach (Bill Russell in 1966). No one disclosed that the letter implored Knight to invite Auerbach to a Big Ten basketball game so the writer could attack the Celtics president. Or that the author described a scenario in which he "would have grabbed a tire iron or pipe and cracked Auerbach's bald skull into about a thousand pieces." The vulgar, 12-page letter, obtained by the Globe from the FBI under the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act, had been archived since the bureau's pursuit of the writer quietly ended in vain 26 years ago.

I hope that the sender was investigated and thrown in jail. Whoever sent this kind of threat should be taken out of society where s/he puts other people at risk. What a dirtbag.

Probably someone from the Ku Klux Klan.
If you go to the Klan website, you see that they are trying to cover up their past and also covering up their ignorance by claiming that they are a peaceful organization.
If you read further, the truth emerges that they are still in favor of segregation and non-mixing of races. Too bad that they don't understand that races have already been mixed successfully.
No worry. They are also scared to death that Obama may win the Presidency, and if that happens, the joke is on them. Would love to see the look on a Klansman's face the moment Obama's victory is official.

This is an amazing little article out of no where... Maybe we can get more articles to discuss that are actually meaningful like this one instead of Arod and his wife, or Bonds and Juice... Or Tiger won with a hangnail...
But I agree, I doubt they ever caught the person responsible, but if they did I hope they dealt with them accordingly

It just makes me appreciate even more the steps Red Auerbach took to integrate the league. It's funny because growing up black in Philly we all hated Auerbach and thought, in our stupidity, that he was a symbol of some the racists dolts in Boston. I admit my ignorance back then with the only excuse of being young and stupid. Red Auerbach was a brave man, a true pioneer and one of my favorite human beings ever. There are a lot of dude, black and white, who are getting paid today because of the line he so courageous drew in the sand. How fitting is it that the Celtics win the chip with a black man at the helm.
Red, wherever you are, I salute you.

Please note that in the article, it states the Boston Globe filed Freedom of Information requests concerning any/all FBI files involving a number of deceased New England sports personalities as well as files on Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle and Howard Cosell....
Among the requests filed by the Globe on the fishing expedition were requests for files on Ted Williams, Tony Conigliaro, Thomas and Jean Yawkey, Reggie Lewis. Rocky Marciano, Willie Pep and Sam Jethroe.
Not a single one of these people are alive and in a position to create news yet the Boston Globe still felt the need to file requests and gain access to any FBI files that might have existed on these people......
Nice twist to this story about Red Auerbach and his dedication to racial equality but I'm betting the Globe really hoped that the files held information on Red having cocktails with Chairman Mao and hitting the strip joints on Route One with Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh......

we're giving auerbach all this credit for breaking racial barriers and being a jetsetter, but really, the guy never tried to be a civic pioneer. check out "the rivalry," a fantastic book by john taylor. auerbach drafted chuck cooper, quite honestly, because he was the best talent available. the fact that he had the rocks to do that led other teams to do the same thing. he put five black players on the court because that was his best team, and he let bill russell coach because he knew bill russell wouldnt listen to any other coach. red auerbach was not a civil rights pioneer; he was an **** who didnt care what other people thought, and god bless him for that.

I don't understand the last note's ill will towards Auerbach; he isn't portrayed as an activist, he took and played the best players regardless of race - which some other coaches refused to do. Isn't that the real objective of civil rights? Equal opportunity regardless of race, creed, color, etc.?

who knew?? growing up in LA I really hated the celtics and Red...I thought Boston was racist and I still do....but I didnt know about Mr Auerbach as a person...I didnt know that he was pivotal in intergrating the NBA...I didnt know that he sacrificed business and personal relationships in order to do the right and just thing...I didnt know that Red was a good man..I didnt know that he deserved my utmost respect....and I didnt know that his life was being threatened by some maniac that was invisible to him yet , could have been anywhere...It goes to show just how limited our knowledge of others can be..

Hey, Red was trying to win championships and he didn't let the backwoods mentality of the times stop him from getting the best players. Fact is, he groomed Bill Russell to be the next coach of that team, which was unheard of in those days. Just like bill sl said, he didn't do it satisfy some racial quota, he did it because he only wanted the best. Which is why he's one of the greatest, if not the greatest, coach in NBA history. Winning above everything, even the racism of the 60's.

While these guys can still be dangerous, for the most part they are really a joke now. I never understood what "pure white arian blood" was. Can anyone now adays really say they are "pure white"? Hell by 2030 white people in th world will probably be the minority. Even if Aurbach never intended to be a pioneer, he was, and who really cares the reason. Abe Lincoln didnt' free the slaves because he felt bad for them. He did it for strategic purposes, either way it happened and it lead to greater things.
