Leafs save money for Sundin
With Matt Stajan safely under contract for the next two years, the Maple Leafs figure they have just enough left over for Mats Sundin. That is, if he decides he wants to play hockey next season. And if he decides to take the Leafs' offer of about $7 million (all figures U.S.) annually, instead of the two-year, $20 million offer from Vancouver that would make him the NHL's highest paid player. Stajan, signing for two years, $3.5 million, doesn't eliminate the Leafs from the Sundin sweepstakes, but it does mark the end, as far as GM Cliff Fletcher is concerned, for signings and re-signings. "That's it for the summer," said Fletcher.

I just can't stand the thought of Sundin coming back - here is Brett Favre, 3-time mvp, superbowl champ, coming off his best season ever, pro-bowl season, and arguably one of the best ever, wanting to come back to his team - and they don't really want him beacsue they feel it is time to move on... and then we have the leafs - waiting on and wanting back a classic under-acheiver, overpaid guy who has a history of disappearing when his team needed him the most....
the leafs as a franchise are a total joke...

This guy was the one man who never quit on a team of quitters. He should always be welcome back.

I don't see what would be so bad about going to Vancouver. Yeah you're going to finish in the bottom of the division probably, but you will get paid. I mean I know glory is great and all, but I would take 10 million a year and deal with it.
I think the Leafs need to move on. They should pull a Dan Boyle like move on McCabe if they want to get rid of his salary if he refuses to waive the NTC. The only way they should keep him is if Schenn will be mentored and rooming with him, that's the only way I can justify keeping him.
Prior to Bettman, were these ever even around? I wish he'd go back to the hole in the ground he came from.

the leafs and not only them are idiots. Ok Sudin is siting in Sweden sipping on wine and saying which sucker will I hear from today. The money being offered by the canuks is insane. Imagine if the offers stopped, no interest what than. Sundin wouldn't be so cocky. Besides if he goes to a team who actually makes the playoffs..he would know what to do. Most likely take a plane to Sweden out of habit

Hey folks,
That is a well written, provocative blog that is posted above. Should be required reading for all FNers.

The Leafs are in the same fix as the Canucks. They need a big name player in their stable for promo purposes.... and Sundin and Dmitra are pretty much the only ones left out there. If the Leafs pony up with $20 mil, he stays!

I don't think $ are the issue for Sundin. All things being equal he'd probably go to the higher bidder as he's no fool.
I'd bet the farm he is not into West Coast travel and nobody has it worse than Hongcouver.
I bet if Detroit offered him pylon money heed consider it to win a cup.
But I bet it's Montreal, Toronto or retirement.

Anyone else getting tired of all the Sundin articles? Just let me know when he signs somewhere or retires. Enough speculation...enough commentary. **it or get off the pot.

That's even worse for your short-term memory than that stuff that the Canucks GM was smoking. Bad for your heart, too. Just ask Len Bias......( I had just left U MD when that tragic debacle occurred and feel entitled to add it ).

Oh! Come on, Hank! When was the last time the Canuck players had to land in a blinding snow storm in 40 below temperatures, unless they were landing in Edmonton to play the Oilers?
That "distinction" definitely belongs to Edmonton first, Calgary second and Vancouver a distant third! Just think! Every time the Oilers get home, they have to find their vehicles under a pile of snow, dig them out and chisle through two inches of ice on their windshields, then hope they can open the frozen doors and .... keep their fingers crossed the battery is not dead! It's a relief just to get the engine to turn over!

Simply talking time spent in an airport or on a plane. Vancouver has to be the worst for that. No trains or buses for divisional games.
I don't have the stats on hand (and you know what I think of stats...) but no way Sundin wants to climb into that morass. Living in TO he probably has had his fair share of blizzards.
