Canucks GM under pressure

Brendan Morrison's departure, coupled with Markus Naslund's last Thursday, puts further pressure on Canucks GM Mike Gillis to land reluctant superstar Mats Sundin. The 37-year-old Swede is sitting on a massive $10-million-a-season offer from Gillis. Sundin can choose either a one- or two-year proposal. Meanwhile, Canuck defenseman Mattias Ohlund said he is ready to pump up Vancouver should Sundin require any additional information on the team or city. Ohlund is now the longest serving Canuck with Trevor Linden and Naslund both gone. "If Mats calls, trust me I will put in a good word for the team," Ohlund chuckled Monday from his summer home in northern Sweden. "I haven't spoken to him or the Canucks or anybody regarding him. Maybe I should call him. I don't know if it would help or not. I guess it couldn't hurt."

Canucks are done. Fini. Washed up. When you have management salivating over a 37 year old player like Sundin and trying to throw 10 million dollars a year at him, essentially you havent a clue. What possible future could you be setting up for your team? None! When a guy hits 37, he is half the player he used to be and what skill he has remaining is in its flickering twilight. 10 million bucks? Are you serious? Luongo better be very, VERY good this year or we are looking at this year's Lightning.

Gillis is in way over his head. Agent to GM??? Tough U-Turn.

No way Sundin goes there. No chance in hell.

They have only Demitra to fish for now.

"Canucks GM under pressure"

No kidding! I don't think Gillis expected this kind of welcome to his new GM job! The Canucks are a team in dissarray, scrambling to hold things together.

How quickly fortunes can turn in the new NHL! For two long years (since the Pronger fiasco) Canucks and Flames fans were relentless in lipping at Oilers fans. "Nobody wants to play in Edmonton. The Oilers su*ck!"

Now, the shoe is on the other foot. They are getting a taste of their own medicine as it's their turn to go through this down cycle and the pains of rebuilding.

How do you like them apples, 'nuckleheads? It doesn't feel very good, does it?

Dude what happened to the Canucks? Like how do they spend their money?

July 9, 2008  01:55 PM ET

The Canucks owner sounds like a moron. They obviously need to rebuild and should have stuck with Dave Nonis as GM with a plan in place - you need some patience to turn around a franchise. Paying 10 million for Mats Sundin would be preposterous, outrageous and ignorant. If that's Mike Gillis' big move, the 'Nucks are in big trouble.

July 9, 2008  02:03 PM ET

If he signs Sundin to a 20 million dollar contract, it will certainly make him the biggest idiot in the league...

Vancouver is in trouble. Luongo can only do too much before he runs out of gas and the Sisters can't carry a team by themselves. But whatever they do they better do it fast. Luongo's contract doesn't last much longer and if they aren't a contender by then I think he'll say "see ya, going to a contender".

July 9, 2008  05:12 PM ET

Ragbhir Luongo is all they have going for them, he's just about their only asset. They should trade him now and get help which they desperately need. They aren't going to win a thing with him so start by trading him for somebody who then has to come at least for the length of his existing contract.

Im not sure everything is as bleak as you are all making it out to be. There are still too many unknowns...

If Canucks are able to sign Sundin and still get Demitra, they may have the cap space to do it, then they can expect a huge improvement over last year.

Last year they were hit by the injury bug hard, all of their top defensemen were out for extended periods of time. Kinda hard to make the playoffs, which they almost did, when you have hundreds of games missed by your starting six defense. Next, you replace an injured (last year) and past his prime with Sundin who still has plenty in his tank, Morrison hasnt done anything for years and Demitra would be a huge improvement, and Bernier and Wellwood could definitely improve/rebound from disappointing seasons.

This is why they are throwing this money at Sundin, he could put the Canucks as contenders, and if they are able to sign Demitra/Sundin, that is exactly what they are.

July 9, 2008  09:53 PM ET

Vancouver should tank the season and pray they get John Tavares.

July 9, 2008  10:13 PM ET

I think demitra would be a great fit in vancover ( as well as many other teams) he's a great talant for the 60 or so games he plays.

@ Kingsley they cannot trade luongo. I know he is their greatest asset as far as trading goes and would yeild great return but yo can always biuld around a great goalie and often thats the hardest peice to get. Luongo is good enough to steal a ton of games that vancouver would other wise lose! H
