Expect new Cowboys coach in '09

This is not a make-or-break season for coach Wade Phillips, though I happen to think it's his last season. He'll either take this team loaded with talent and win the Super Bowl and ride off into the sunset afterward. Or the Cowboys will fall short of their goal, and Jerry Jones will give him a golden parachute to leave so he can promote Jason Garrett. The Cowboys' offensive coordinator, the NFL's highest-paid assistant coach, turned down head coaching jobs in Atlanta and Baltimore last season. It's hard to believe he would turn down the opportunities he's sure to get at the end of this season, provided the Cowboys have the high-powered offense everyone anticipates. This is not so much a knock on Wade as it is a reality of the situation. Jerry eventually wants Garrett to be the head coach, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Old story, move on already. This has been playing out longer than the Favre B.S.

July 9, 2008  07:00 AM ET

Let me call a few of his games. Then people won't think he's so hot. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

July 9, 2008  07:02 AM ET

Old, this story has been around since November of last year

July 9, 2008  07:20 AM ET

What I want to know is what did Farve do yesterday? What's he eating for breakfast? What does his mom have to say? Who might Favre get traded to? What teams need Favre's services? Did he text anyone? How is Aaron handling all this? What is the plan about retiring Farve's jersey in game one? What is Carl Eller up to these days? Why isn't the second guy arrested in Javon's escapade saying anything? Does he even speak english? What about Vick and his bankruptcy? Is Plaxico gonna hold out if he doesn't get his contract by training camp? And most of all, why can't T&R come up with something new? These are my questions? Of course Garrett is taking over for Wade! This we already know. Help us out here a little....

When does training camp start? These stories are getting old..

July 9, 2008  07:37 AM ET

The only issue I have with Jason Garrett is that he wants to pass allllll the time. He is more like Mike Martz. I like Wade Phillips....there should be no rush to push him out.....Even though he will.

July 9, 2008  07:46 AM ET

I wouldn't compare Garrett to Martz. Garrett used what he had last year. J. Jones was a waste of space. And you can't run Barber 30 times a game the way he runs. I think this year with drafting 2 RBs, you will see more balance.

July 9, 2008  08:13 AM ET

I love Wade Phillips....... but I dont think a superbowl will save his job....... reminds me of JIMMY JOHNSON

July 9, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Super Bowl... Wade Phillips? How about baby steps. First he needs to win a playoff game... any playoff game.

July 9, 2008  08:31 AM ET

My only question is who the heck is this guy. He had one good year with an offense with a lot of talent and all of a sudden he is the greatest assistant coach ever. If he does become the Cowboys new head coach, then he will have some big shoes to fill with the little experience that he has.

In about 12 of the longest days you'll ever know unless you're in labor, then every minute feels like 12 days.
