Did agent send Brand packing?

Gee, why do these things keep happening to the Clippers? I know what you're thinking, but they didn't lose Elton Brand because owner Donald T. Sterling couldn't be reached or wouldn't come up with the money. It looks as if they lost Brand because he wanted out, which came as a shock since he always seemed true Clippers red, white and blue. On the other hand, Brand was a Clipper for seven seasons so even if it was the best time in their history, think how many bad days he saw as opposed to good days. Losing Corey Maggette the same day makes it a bigger story, but the Clippers knew he was gone a long time ago and had no intention of keeping him. With Brand, on the other hand, they had every intention of keeping him and were stunned to find out he was gone. How it got to that point is a mystery. Brand had helped talk Baron Davis into signing with the Clippers, saying he would take less money to make it happen. Technically, Brand took a bigger offer from the 76ers, $82 million to the Clippers' $75 million. However, with Sterling giving his basketball people a blank check, the Clippers were going to dump enough players to get to $81 million. That offer was never relayed to Brand. The Clippers say at the end, agent David Falk stopped returning their calls. Whether the imperious Falk, who once represented Michael Jordan, did this for revenge or just because it felt good is a mystery. He did once vow to get the Clippers for not taking his client, Mike Bibby, with the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft.

well agents do get a commission or percentage of the contract, so one would think that it would be in his best interest to get his client the best possible contract. plus, he can play in the junior varsity conference, have a much easier road to and through the playoffs, and doesn't have to play second fiddle to the lakers.

Sixers do it again. What a stupid move to sign a guy coming off of a major injury and passing up on more athletic younger stud like Josh Smith. This organization never ceases to amaze with their bone head moves. Why don't they just go resign Derrick Coleman while their at it?

lol maxwellinformed. Please tell me Brand made this desicion and not his agent because of a few million dollars.

All I know is Golden State and LAC are both destined for mediocrity. As a Pistons fan, I learned the hard way that this Philly team is a young and scrappy good team already. The consistent low-post scoring and veteran leadership will be huge. This should be enough to get them home court in the first round this year, if Brand stays healthy.

Wow, after having helped recruit baron davis, Elton really stuck it to the clippers, and Baron davis.....No brand, no maggette, Barons going to have to go for 50 every game for them to win

Get off the pipe mate. Smith over Brand??? That's nuts. Just don't go by raw athleticism and youth. Philly needs experience and LEADERSHIP!!! Smith has a loooong way to go before he's considered a team leader. He's fought with his coach, assistant ooach, teammates and towards the end of the season, you could see him not make passes at all, and started jacking up 3-pointers.
I agree he's a great talent, prolly more than Brand - BUT its not what 76ers needs now. AI provides much of the dynamics Smith can (although diff position). Brand should make them get over the playoff hump with no issues.
ofCourse injuries are always a question mark on ANY team.

Hahah Baron Davis should have waited til the last day so he wouldn't have been the last person at the dance on the LAC dance floor.

And I'm glad for the Sixers, I always felt bad for them after being stuck with Iverson all those years. They really played hard the second half of last season instead of tanking (worthless Miami HEAT) and I respect that.

And what's up with his GQ pic up there? LOL

July 9, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Although this is a huge blow to the Clippers, the team will still be better than last season as Brand had no impact last year due to his injury. Al Thornton is really going to have to step up if he is going to take the starting role for the year. Still, it's not to late for the Clippers to make a move.

CRACK PIPE?! You friggin idiot. Read your own words. You don't pick broken down Fleetwood Brougham when you can get a Jaguar S-Type. Sixers have history of players with injury problems and for them to perpetuate this is crazy. Brand is not getting Philly any closer to a championship. They need to think about the future and you rebuild with young players like Josh Smith, who is only 23 and is only getting better.

Brand, 29, is coming back from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles' tendon

July 9, 2008  08:52 AM ET

This is probably not a shocker. Brand is tired of the Clippers and really wanted to move on. He was probably happy that the 76ers came along because it would have been really bad if he signed for GS. That would have been a major backstab to the Clippers and BDiddy. Last year I talked to Brand in baseball charity game in Dallas and he wanted to play for the Mavs. He knows Dallas needed a post up player like him. But the Mavs made a mistake of trading JKidd this year because now they don't have the money to sign any big name free agents such as Brand.

By the looks of the Philly fan blogs, most Philly fans agree with me, this was absolutely stupid.

David Falk is a supreme ****. The Clippers went out of their way last season to put Sam Cassell (Falk client) on a contender (and eventual champs) and this is how Falk repays the Clippers. If Falk values his life. he will never set foot in L.A. again.

I think Brand will be a good fit on the 76ers as long as he stays healthy. I can understand the argument to sign Josh Smith instead of Elton Brand, but I believe Brand is more talented personally and he is only 29. He has a few good years ahead of him. He will help the 76ers continue to build their franchise. Yes, Brand has been hurt and got a big contract. I don't see what the big deal is, you can give Brand $82 million if you can give Gilbert Arenas $111 million.

Nobody is more screwed now than Baron Davis.

July 9, 2008  09:20 AM ET

"Although this is a huge blow to the Clippers, the team will still be better than last season "

How exactly ?

They are losing 40 + points in scoring.
Davis is coming off his 1st healthy seasn in years
and most importantly they are the CLIPPERS

Amen. Davis must regretting his move right now.

This is not a bad signing on their part.....They knew coming into the free agent period that they had to improve the low post game....Elton Brand does that....Should they have gone after Josh Smith? Who knows....they JUST drafted Marresse Speights (aka the poor man's Brand)....so who knows....maybe Brand is brought in here to mentor Speight to be the "next" Brand....

Josh Smith is younger and more athletic....but why draft Speights in the first round if you were gonna go after someone almost as young in free agency?

Next season....work on the CENTER position....I'm not the biggest Dalembert fan....and I know he improved alot last season, but they could be better in the middle....
