Who won Rodriguez-WVU feud?

West Virginia University gets its $4 million. Rich Rodriguez gets a delayed payment plan for his $1.5 million contribution, gets much the same terms he received from Michigan in their mid-December negotiations -- which the Post-Gazette reported Dec. 17 -- when the football coach left West Virginia and gets the same buyout amount as former Mountaineers basketball coach John Beilein, also now at Michigan. So who really won this 6 1/2-month episode of a messy divorce court that concluded yesterday in a settlement? In the settlement University of Michigan officials urged Rodriguez's side to broker, the school's athletic department will pay $2.5 million -- nearly 10 times the previous purported record for such a payoff -- of the $4 million buyout specified in the contract Rodriguez reached with West Virginia in August. Rodriguez will pay $1.5 million over a three-year span that begins in 21/2 years, with $500,000 payments due at the end of 2010, '11 and '12. Michigan officials also agreed in the settlement to pick up Rodriguez's attorney fees and court costs, though West Virginia will not receive either of those or interest on money owed -- Rodriguez's first installment was due in January.

Not really sure who won this but I sure hope it was worth it for Michigan to get this guy. As a Michigan fan, I am not so excited about this hire anymore. I am not sure I want Michigan to get this type of attention. Time will tell though

This is the outcome that would have happened if RR and WVU hadn't entered the Cage of Death to fight. It is my assumption that UM was always going to pay the majority of it but devised a plan with RR to have him contest the amount hoping that WVU would settle for less as it did with Beilein when he left. Unfortunately that plan did not work out. And my guess is that the lawyers working for RR were on retainer by UM to begin with so that what ever fees they racked up were already paid for. And remember that AD Martin had secured 1.5 MM for RR early on when RR offered to settle for 1.5MM and WVU turned it down.

End result is that NO ONE WON. Only thing is that both got bloodied. This was just one big **** match. Now, hopefully, RR and his ego can go back and focus 100% on UM FOOTBALL and WVU and it's vindictiveness can turn it's sights onto something else, like getting a handle on the corruption within the Uni to stop "preferred" students who don't do the required coursework from miraculously getting their masters degree.

July 10, 2008  07:16 AM ET

July 10, 2008  07:32 AM ET

agreed Therrien Rocks.

July 10, 2008  07:34 AM ET

I agree with Warden, Not sure there is a winner here. Maybe Pitt and Penn State?

July 10, 2008  08:14 AM ET

OHIO STATE

July 10, 2008  08:35 AM ET

4vr,

Not everything revolves around OSU. I hope Michigan didn't just get the football equivalent of Kelvin Sampson. Absolutely no ethics.

RR is paying $4 million, like the contract he agreed to and signed states. To me WV won. RR lost a lot of credibility in this. A lot of Michigan fans didn't want this baggage he carries. He needs to win in year 2 or the seat will get very warm.

I agree with The Warden - Michigan planned for this very scenario. That is why they already had the 1.5M available for RR and put the buyout in their contract. If he could get his buyout reduced, fine if not they would pay BUT they protected themselves until the remaining 2.5M is covered if he left early. I think the buyout will be dropped when the two parties agree that the extra 2.5M has be earned/satisfied.

This is one of the better posts about this topic. WVU won they got the 4M just like they wanted. They don't care if the $$ is from RR or UM. Just to bad there isn't any interest charges.

Alright WVU fans....it's over now, so QUIT YER BITCHIN'!!!!!!

Look totally agree with warden about the legal fees. The news outlets act like this is such a huge chunk of change for both schools but they both have lawyers on retainer for these type of issues. So in the end the legal part should have been nothing to them. But i would like to point out to warden that our corrupt President is leaving so we have gotten a handle on the corruption; has Michigan gotten a handle on there Professor corruption scandal? Don't be a hypocrite.

To pretend UM is the only school giving favors to players is ignorant.

I hope for the integrity of the game that all schools are dealing with it.

And as important as winning is at Michigan, I think if RR is on the hot seat in the near future, it is for character issues... This guy better be on his best behaviour, he has a lot of guys assuming the worst...

Who won? No one, period. My opinion is this, Martin is a idiot, Coleman and Martin should have been fired. Martin had no plan for Carr's replacement and it showed. Coleman should have never allowed this debacle to happen in the first place or for that matter allowed this to go on as long as it did. They knew all along about the 4 mil. They should along with Richey Rod split the difference and finish the problem. But oh no, these two bungeling idiots allowed RR to run the show and for what? They paid the money anyway, didn't they? You can so whatever about Bo you want but I know this much, he would not had tolerated this mess to even get as far as it did and sure in the hell would not have stood for "anyone" to damage the reputation of the University he dearly loved! I'm one Michigan Fan who is NOT sold on this coach or the decision of the "dumb and dumber twins" (Coleman and Martin) to hire RR. They better pray this coach works out and in the process dosen't do to them as he did to WVU! If this keeps up (the continuing mess in Ann Arbor) i'll for one will miss Bo more than ever!

July 10, 2008  10:31 AM ET

RR won, he only has to pay 1.5 million over the next 3 years. WVU won cause they got all their money. Meechigan lost casue they had to eat 2.5 mill plus it drug their name through the mud

July 10, 2008  10:34 AM ET

May I sugges the attorney won?

July 10, 2008  10:49 AM ET

I don't need to add anything. Airborne 72 said it all.
Be careful what you wish for Michigan fans, you may just get it.

WVa gets a slight win, RR a slight loss and Michigan is the big loser. They have a TON of $$ invested and their coach has a credability issue. Now all this will change if RR wins. If he wins big, UM will turn out to be a big winner and all the money and turmoil will be well worth it. By "big" I mean contend for the NC and beat OSU at least twice in a row.
