Angels bench slumping Matthews
Angels Manager Mike Scioscia benched slumping Gary Matthews Jr. on Wednesday and said he wasn't sure how long it would be before the outfielder returned to the lineup. "He's got to get into his game," Scioscia said of Matthews, who is batting .186 with only two extra-base hits since June 19. "I don't know where we're going to be tomorrow or a week from now. But I do know that it's very clear -- and Gary said it very clearly too -- he's not where he needs to be."

When do you think his so-called slump will turn into strong suspicion about his PED use?

another example of a mediocre player having one good year (contract year ) in a hitter friendly park (texas) and turning it into a boatload of cash. nice move angels. hahahahaha

As an Angels fan I tried to convince myself that he would somehow be able to hit at least .290 with a .450 slugging % and okay on base % with the Angels, but I knew that in reality he would not come even remotely close to his production in Texas. It's true that HGH likely played a huge role in his career year in 2006, however, playing half his games in hitter friendly Texas obviously was a big factor too. Now the Angels are stuck paying a late inning defensive replacement in the outfield All Star money.

He was an awful signing at the time and they are going to either have to bench him, send him down, or cut him. With his salary those are the only options

The list of so called "Slumping" players is growing. Any player that had 1 or 2 good years in the early part of this decade is suspect.

It was a bad signing but Arte Morena had to do it to show he was trying because the fans were getting on his case about getting another bat.

I just knew this guy was just a flash in the pan. He always seemed to be a pretty weak hitter until his one good year in Texas.

I agree that the signing was largely made to try and appease the fans that were getting on the organization for not acquiring a big bat, but to give so much money to a journeyman player that just had 1 good year in his 30s is a big mistake.
