08:42 AM ET 07.10 | The cat is finally out of the bag. There need be no further discussions as to who will captain the Europe team in the 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland. Colin Montgomerie all but admitted here at Loch Lomond, on the eve of the Barclays Scottish Open, that he will lead the home team in the biennial match against the United States at Gleneagles. Now that this appears to have been sorted out, all that remains is to decide who will be in charge at Celtic Manor in 2010 and Medinah Country Club in 2012.

Monty may be dead in 6 years

July 10, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Does this tournament mean anything anymore?

its a shame that the Ryder cup and all of its tradition has lost popularity and even credence because a certain self righteous US star has not given it much thought- apparently Nike and his wallet dont see enough benefit to it.

LIke it or not Golf comes from that Island in the North Atlantic and there are traditions there that shouldnt be forgotten

July 10, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Well, I'm sure glad we cleared who will captain the 2-0-1-4 team!!! Can we work on 2015 now?

July 10, 2008  11:22 AM ET

2014???? He will probally be dead by then. Must be a really slow day to tell us in 6 years he will be a captain of the team... what the heck?

I still wonder why it's America vs. a continent?

They need to setup matches between countries and limit 4 man teams from each country. I think Ireland would love to kick England's ****...there's an older rivalry between the European countries.

Also, I would like to see A US cup tournament...the best player from each state or region could play. I'm sure a South vs. North rivalry would be watched.

They've got to figure something out to get people watching these geographical emphasized matches

Thank you Hellen...I'm serious, they need to start capitalizing on the real hatred!

All of these countries have had wars in the past:
England vs. Scottland
England vs. Ireland
England vs. Spain
England vs. France
England vs. America
England vs. India
England vs. Germany
England vs. Japan
England vs. Italy

Wait a sec...I think I'm seeing a theme here....I really don't hate England, but damn they've fought with everyone!

America vs. Mexico
America vs. itself
America vs. Germany
America vs. Japan
America vs. Italy

I could go on and on but I think you all get the point...there is vast amounts of rivalry to be looked at here.

SeanPatrick, if you're insinuating that Tiger is missing the Ryder cup for monetary reasons, you must be either a) a complete idiot, or b) living in a cave and haven't read any of the world's major newspapers for the past month and a half. And my bet is its not option B. Jump under a moving bus, clown.

Rory, you are right. How about a match between Sergio Garcia and his alter ego, the whiny punk who insists he's "playing against more than the field"?

Should I be excited about Monty in 2014 ??? I'm trying to get through a pretty (physical) crappy 2008 !!!

July 10, 2008  07:39 PM ET

Finally, I'll be able to get some sleep. The Cup is only 6 years away and it's been agonizing not knowing who will be captain.

Tiger not being part of the Ryder Cup is a good call for the right reason. The moronic media would put all the attention on Tiger and he would not be comfortable with that. The Ryder Cup is so team driven, the media coverage on Tiger if he were there would take away from that. Tiger is a GREAT golfer not doubt, but has never been or never will be a TEAM type guy. Nothing wrong with that because golf as a whole is not a team sport.

Perhaps as captain he'll perform better. His career never paned out as most of his fans remember. I guess you can thank the other half dozen or so players (Tiger Woods for one) who's mental game out played Monty's.
