Rutgers cuts back stadium plan

Rutgers University will scale back its $102 million football stadium expansion project in the face of skyrocketing fuel, concrete and steel costs, university officials said today. The first part of the project, which will add 1,000 "premium" seats, will not be affected. Robert Mulcahy, the university's director of athletics said contract bids for phase two, which will add 13,000 additional seats, came in higher than estimated. While they do not anticipate cutting the number of seats, officials said all options are on the table. The controversial stadium project is being rushed to meet increasing demand for tickets caused by the football team's recent success. About $72 million of the stadium expansion cost will be publicly financed, with the remaining $30 million being raised through private donations in a campaign spearheaded by Gov. Jon Corzine.

uh oh, will this cause recruits to decommit?

And what about Schiano's helicopter? Is Rutger's going to ground that since chopter fuel is outrageous now?

July 10, 2008  07:36 AM ET

Rutgers...Rutgers....I thought they were a news agency....

July 10, 2008  08:16 AM ET

I don't see why anyone would decommit. They said they are cutting back the plan not stopping it all together. They can probably cut costs in the architectural side. In other words, it might not be as pretty, but it can still hold 13,000 new seats.

July 10, 2008  10:12 AM ET

A kid who would decommit because the stadium won't have as many seats as previously thought probably isn't serious about the task at hand for a D-I football player, so good riddance if that's the case.

By the way, anyone living in the bankrupt state of New Jersey with a brain knew this was coming.

July 10, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Sounds like the regualr fans that have been showing up for years are going to get shafted bacuase they can't pay $1,000 per seat. Sad. Rutgers is a great college football story.

July 10, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Can you say "PSL?" i hope they don't go that route.

July 10, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Guys, I was being facetious about the decommitting...

July 10, 2008  10:36 AM ET

You know what would be funny, if by the time they finish the expansion, the team sucks again and the stadium is empty again.

AFScott | 07/10/08,

AFScott, you have hit the nail right on the head! My parents and brother are long-time suffering RU fans who sat through the bad years in an empty stadium. Now they are surrounded ignorant front runners who bring a Yankee fan mentality to a college football team that is beginning to finally improve. I am happy for RU's little bit of success in recent years, but you couldn't pay me to ever go back to that stadium with all of these new rich, frontrunner **** who suddenly are RU fans.
Your second comment about PSLs is also probably right on the money too.

July 10, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Big business at academia! Isn't it odd that the 1,000 seats for the big bucks (fair weather) people are fine, but the seats for the real fans are a no-go. And what about this little news gem:

...While they do not anticipate cutting the number of seats, officials said all options are on the table.

Something has to give for the premium seats to become available probably with their dreaded "seat license" provision.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of some recuits backing out. When Schivano sat in their living room and painted the glorious picture of the growth of Rutgers football...and now with this....they may feel a bit let down. What the heck, Schivano is headed to penn St next year anyway isn't he?

What's this about a helicopter?

July 10, 2008  02:29 PM ET

Miyagi,

Rutgers supplies Schiano with a helicopter to go visit recruits.

FootballGuru | 07/10/08, 10:36 AM

this probably was factored into the decision to slow the project down in the first place...

in 5 years they may end up looking like the '88 cleveland indians playing in front of 2,000 fans in an 80,000 seat stadium...

living in the NY area I have noted that it is quite funny to see the massive increase in Giant Red R stickers on everyone's car lately...I should have gotten into the giant red R sticker business 3 years ago to capitalize on this bandwagon.

Must be nice to have a helicopter. Imagine the outrage if Charlie Weis had one at ND!

July 11, 2008  06:51 PM ET

"publicly financed" by people that can't afford to go to the games.

July 11, 2008  11:25 PM ET

couldn't they go ahead and get a corporate sponsor, for the naming rights to the stadium...I mean it would suck to have Bristol-Myers Squibb Stadium, but thus is the age we live in...

And just when I thought the "Build it and they will come" theory was for real. Coach Schiano could have saved Michigan's Football Program from the **** slap from their Univ. Pres. Mary Sue Coleman by taking the Michigan job. President Coleman allows Michigan's Football Program to be the "darling of the media" then on the verge of being deposed- settles? What- she was going to miss a nail appoitment? Coach Schiano might be asking himself if not taking the Michigan job now was a mistake. We know how the Coach Rod promises at WVU played out-or should I say paid out. I hope this decision doesn't take away from the Rutgers Football Program but it certainly doesn't sound like it will help. Will this be enough of a reason for Coach Schiano to "visit" PSU? I wonder if Rutgers didn't just open the for him to leave?
