Mulder's career may be over

Whatever organizational hope remained attached to Mark Mulder's twice-repaired left shoulder came undone Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park when his first major-league start this season probably became his last of 2008, and perhaps his career.Opening a 4-2 loss to the Phillies, the Cardinals lefthander walked from the field after managing one out, a strikeout of shortstop Jimmy Rollins, followed by two walks. The same pitch that struck out Rollins caused Mulder pain so severe he could not throw any of his last eight pitches from the same angle or with the same force. "I just keep getting let down. I don't know really what to do," Mulder said.

Looks grim. That turned out a really bad trade when they got him from the A's.

I can't believe anyone in the Cards organization held out any hope for Mulder - at least this year. He's still fairly young. With another year or two he might be able heal, reinvent himself and pitch again. It shouldn't be here. We can't keep paying him to sit on an operating table.

Three of our four highest paid pitchers have spent more time on the DL than the active roster over the last three years. We need to let some of them go and get replacements.

He gave us one decent year in 2005 - not overpowering, just decent.

July 10, 2008  07:32 AM ET

No ill will against Mulder. He's handled all this with class and has tried to do anything asked of him.

I agree CardsFan, however I thought that the trigger should have been pulled when he had to change his arm angle. Now the question is do we wait to see what Carpenter does or do we go get an arm or do we go get a shortstop that can produce at the plate with runners on base?

good pitcher in his day but he's done.

Things went downhill for this guy after that tv show was cancelled. I feel for him honestly.

That's really too bad. You never like to see that.

Billy Beane has a knack for knowing when to unload players from his roster. More often than not the players he lets go don't do as well as they did before they left. Hopefully for every team in the NL that isn't the Cubs, he'll be right about Harden too.

I think that it is time to turn the page on Mulder. When we acquired him after the 2004 Pennant season, I thought it was a great deal.....even though I hated to give up Haren, I thought Mulder was the missing piece we needed to win the title. It just hasn't worked out that way for Mulder. I wonder if we bought damaged goods and Walt got taken by Oakland.

And I agree with CardsFan2, I don't have any ill will for Mulder. He has been a professional about it and I think no one feels worse about his inability to contribute to the Cards than him. It's just time to move on, and hopefully he can pull it together and pitch somewhere else at some point.

After several years of the Cards hosing other teams (Rolen, Walker, Edmonds, etc.) it looks like the shoe is on the other foot. Sad day for Mulder, too bad for the team.

Superheat - I don't think they can count on Adam and Carp. We're still leading the WC race, but I think if they want to stay in the hunt, they need to add a starter and LH help in the bullpen.

bill sl - don't forget Renteria and Kile, who were also a Jocketty steals

July 10, 2008  10:58 AM ET

TenRingsSTL-Who do you think is our best option for a starter and who do we give up for him. Reyes and Duncan are obvious to me but I think that we are going to have to give up 3 players to get the kind of front end help we need. I am probably in the minority here but I also think we need short stop that can produce at the plate.

Superheat

We could use help in the middle infield, We MUST have more pitching.

We have a good hitting catcher at AAA and a slew of outfield proscepts who are all blocked at the ML level.

Amazing in this day in era how it seems like every organization has to deal with 5 or more pitchers having to miss significant time per year due to injuries. As a dodgers fan i can say use us as a prime example... penny, lowe, kuroda, saito, brazoban, stults, kuo, proctor, schmidt, have all missed time this year as a result of injury. Back in the days having complete games was a common thing amongst pitchers. In this decade 2 complete games by any pitcher for a season would be considered an elite pitcher. As for mark ,i got your answer " stop wasting peoples money and time and quit .Don't be the nomar of pitchers and give your organization false hope that you will recover.

July 10, 2008  11:42 AM ET

That;s a shame. I've never heard a bad word about the guy. He had a very promising career and the injury bug has done him in. Maybe he'll be able to come back, maybe not. Either way, I wish him the best.

Superheat - I think the biggest impact guys available might be Bedard or Burnett. Personally, I would prefer Bedard. I'd love to unload Reyes and Duncan for him, but I think the price will be a little higher, as I think neither guy has much trade value right now. I would probably sacrifice Bryan Anderson to get Bedard for our rotation. I would guess the Mariners would also want a pitcher like Boggs, although I'd love to try and trade Reyes or Parisi instead. I'd also like to pick up Fuentes for the bullpen.

Reyes is a guy that might benefit greatly from a change of scenery, so hopefully someone will still think he has value.

I agree with you on a SS that can provide offense, but CardsFan2 is right, we MUST get pitching, or we are sunk. I'm not overly concerned about the offense, it's the rotation and the bullpen that most concern me.

first year with the cards...that was about it. Oakland sure picks the right time to deal. Just look at Zito and Mulder. Hudson has been good. Makes you wonder if Harden can ever put it together.
